Holy Crapola on these stock air filters

2 air filters are needed to replace in the 12, and the best price is at Ron Ayers at $31 each...$62 to replace them both. Can you just clean out the old ones? I've heard of replacing them with aftermarket ones but that they actually dont work as well compared to the stock ones...what's the lowdown?

26,500 miles and counting on the ole 12...

Which brands are those TB? Which brand do you recommend? Are they cheaper than stockers?

BMC is pretty much the only way to go. The K + N's for the 12 are complete shit!!! I have both the K + N's and BMC and the quality difference is night and day....and the cost is not that much different.

OH MY GOODNESS...maybe my complaining wasnt so bad after all. BMC air filters are over $70 each...the price of one BMC is more than both of the stock ones...

If I went the BMC route, I'm looking at nearly $140.

Yes Beans... that may very well be the case... but a rebuilt more is FAR more expensive.

Sure you wash the stock filters..... but the let sand and debris through. Plus on the BMC or K&ns you have more filter area!

The K&Ns can be bought on Ebay for $50 new.

Order of that pic is:

Stock K&N, BMC

Hey did you mean a rebuilt motor is far more expensive?

Are those stock filters new or used?

I bought BMC Race filters from Starcycle (starcycle.com) and got them for $109.00. The first time you open the K+N package and try to install them (even slathered in the filter grease they supply...think St Bernard through a cat door) , you will probably regret the decision and wish you would have ponied up the extra cash for the BMC's. I know I did.

.....And Beans...you gotta pay to play.....and the $109 is far less than even the laundry bills from when you shit everytime you pop off the inspection covers and see the gravel and grit going into the engine.

Here are some pics of the dirt I had inside the supposedly filtered side of my airbox after only 3000 miles

I also noticed that EGR hose wasn't helping the problem.

I also believe the fact that the bottom channel of the filter holder is open allows air to sneak around the foam edge of the filter. The fact the hose was also pushing on this corner of the foam added to the problem.

I installed strips of metal in to the air filter holder frame to close the gap. This and cutting the hose solved my filter leak problem.

BMC Race Filters

Been using BMC Race filters for 3 years now. They work great, and breathe better than the stockers.

BMC RACE FILTERS. I have had stock and K&N and quality just cost more! Ever notice how you can always get into a bad mechanic's garage to get work done, but you always have to wait to get into the good ones? Over the years, buying a few stes of Stock will cost more just for the filter not to mention the extra wear the stock ones will cause by leaking all of the dirt in!
