looking to buy zx12r questions

Im looking at buying a 2003 zx12r what are the things that I need to place close attention to. The one Im looking at the owner says is in the shop 3500miles and getting tune up he says the bike is lacking low end power I think it might have been drag raced thanks R

Does the bike have any mods done to it? I can't even remember what the 12 feels like when it's stock....I guess all you can do is ride it and see for yourself if it is lacking power.....or have a friend with a 12 take it out for a putt. Drag racing itself is not the kiss of death for the bike....these things are very tough. The clutch may have taken a beating, but honestly, after having ridden my new bike with a Muzzy clutch and Billet basket (my other 12 has a stock clutch), you won't want to keep the stock clutch for long....it sucks compared to the Muzzy. The Muzzy has better feel, is way more positive (no slippage) and won't shatter the basket like the stock one does. What else can get damaged by, or have accelerated wear as a result of, drag racing? The rear tire (obvious wear pattern), chain and sprockets?....not likely. Transmission?...I don't think so. Suspension?.....fork seal leaks are possible (but obvious). Engine wear? .....probably just getting broken in....and was probably broken in hard (that's a good thing in my opinion).

These bikes have very few weak spots. These are the ones that I can think of:
1) The stock air filters suck ass....get some BMC's
2) The stock clutch is weak and can be prone to basket breakage
3) Stator wiring concerns...oil leaks from under the seat from oil running up the stator wires...there is a recall for that.

If the bike has an aftermarket exhaust - check to see if it has a PowerCommander (www.powercommander.com). If it does, see if the previous owner had a custom map made (you want that - its from 250~400 bucks or so to have it done). If it does not have a powercommander, or if it does not have a custom map - that may be your answer to why it has no low end power...

A ZX12 with 3500 miles should not need a "tune up"..

Keep looking. There are tons of these bikes out there for cheap $$$.
Best bet is to get an 04 model.

If you suspect the bike was drag raced, look under the tail piece and check for tire marks. When lowered, the bike may bottom out under a hard launch.Ask the guy what shop its at and then ask them if there is any history on the bike(crash).

I just saw here in Spokane a super low mileage 2002 ZX-12R for like 6grand, the guy even had receipts showing the valves and everything had been checked out by the dealer. Black I believe...radar detector, nice lookin bike. Not as nice as the blue one of course, but yeah...
