Directly from the 00-01 manual: disconnect either the ECU or the battery.

No problem....glad to help out

I have no manual for the '02 and newer bikes, but suspect that they are the same. Unplugging the ECU is a piece of piss anyways, so that is a good place to start. Even if there are codes stored, they do not affect the operation of the bike unless they are current (FI light on at the time). The codes best function if the concern is not current is that they should direct you at least to the correct neighborhood. If you need more help feel free to ask......I will do what I can to help and there are a pile of guys who are active on this site and know a hell of a lot more than me, who are happy to share knowledge.

Are you seeing error codes from the ECU? I ended up buying a second ECU trying to fix the problem. The orginal unit didn't show any FI errors, but the mechanic thought that this was because the orginal ECU was defective. It turns out that the problem was the throttle position sensor. The sensor was telling the ECU that I was riding at full throttle all the time. My gas mileage went to about 40 miles for an entire tank of gas. When sitting at stop lights, I could see the unburned gas fumes pouring out of the exhaust pipe when the bike was running. The bike ran awful under 4000rpm. It only cleared up above 4000rmp because of the additional air being mixed with the fuel at higher RPM's. I would also recommend checking your spark plugs if your bike is running similiar to the problem I had. Hope this helps.

I got the ecu thing figured out. i was thinking there was some codes stored actually within unable to be seen that maybe there was some sort of reset. so Maxxer helped me out there. my bike, an 02, was shutting off when stopping and just really lurching bad at idle. the gas mileage is down. i get black smoke and the oil is getting fuel in it. i have removed the power commander because i know this problem existed when i installed. didn't know it then, but i know it now. so i guess i should be looking for a tps. where do i find one? i called the dealer and they said it was 1300 bucks because of the assembly and all. i do also have the old bad oil flushed, time to change again with filter. thnks again for the help guys. now,....about that sensor?

tps

You can get the TPS, check your other post. If not I have complete used FI units for $250 not $1300

wilmack,

See the TPS topic in the main ZX12R list. There is all sorts of good information about the TPS. You can do a search for TPS or throttle position sensor on these list and you should find an older topic that a few of us have posted on (I think it was started by Entropy) that is packed full of good info on the subject. NO matter what happens, ensure that at the end of this whole diagnostic procedure and parts replacement (if needed), that the TPS is set the the proper closed voltage position...this is absolutely vital and will affect your powercommander mapping more than you can imagine.

thanks 5-0. i sure am glad to have found this site. so much info and access. this is soooo cool. Maxxer, i talked to my mechanic just a little while ago, we are gonna adjust the tps tomorrow. and if that doesn't work, i'll be getting in touch with 5-0. after all that we have discussed, i am becoming more confident that this sensor is the root of my problems. I cannot wait until we get things tweeked out and everything the way it should be. come on tomorrow. i lucked out, another 4 day weekend.
