Carbon Fiber - Weight Watcher's Plan

Ok, so we all know that a stock ZX12R isn't exactly anorexic. Some might call it svelte.

I don't have the weight comparisons for each piece, so I'll just list them and the results.

Stock ZX12R
Rear plastic fender
Plastic chainguard
Ram Air covers
Snorkle
Fuse cover
Front fender
Gas Tank
Stock wheels
Stock mirrors
Stock windshield
Stock exhaust

Full tank:
Front: 277 lbs
Rear: 278 lbs

555 lbs

- 5 gals 32 lbs

Empty tank: 523 lbs

Weight Watcher's ZX12R

Fender: FSD Undertail
Chainguard: Hans CF Hugger
Side Covers: Hans CF
Snorkle: Hans CF
Fuse cover: Hans CF
Fender: LP CF
Gas Tank: Rico CF (+1 Gal)
Wheels: Marchesini
Mirrors: ZX9 Mirrors
Windshield: Zero Gravity DB
Exhaust: Muzzy Titanium

Full tank:
Front: 258 lbs
Rear: 249 lbs

507 lbs

- 6 gals 39 lbs

Empty tank: 468 lbs

Other improvements:

Galfer wave rotors
Race Tech forks
Ohlins shock
Corbin seat (prolly 2 lbs heavier than stock)

Doing the math, that's 55 lbs lighter when both bikes are pulling up to the pump for a refill, or 48 lbs lighter when topped off with gas. And the Weight Watcher's ZX12R carries a gallon more of gas.

BTW, this was measured using two calibrated electronic scales, one under each wheel.

I think SLIM FAST is cheaper...

I weigh 195lbs. If I lost 50lbs. that would give me 2 tenths for DragRacing!!! Alot cheaper than CarbonFiber Parts, DyMag Rims, lighter Rotors, Airtech body work!!!

Cool, e-mailed inquiry to Jim at LE Suspension. Here's quote reply for ZX12R suspension job:

stock shock - rebuild, revalve, respring, modify compression adjuster so it works. $300.

anodize shock body - prolongs service and performance life by a factor of 4 - $110.

or - penske 2-way $775. 3-way $1150.

forks rebuild, revalve, respring $350. titanium nitride add $400. most work one week or less. add 7-10 days for anodizing or tini.

thx jim

-----------

Think I do the forks soon. I'd like to do the nitride coating too (gold matches the wheels too) but @ $400 extra it's a tough sell...

As for the shock a $300 rebuild sure beats a $800 Penske or Ohlins... But this poor boy will probably just do it anyway as it fits the wallet...

later...

It's great to hear about different customer experiences, when they can recommend a company to other riders. I know I got a great product from Race Tech, but some other riders have had bad experiences with their shipping/handling department.

Weight

Just wondering why Honda, Suzuki (1000 cubics)
are about 100 lbs lighter than our bestloved ZX.-12

Hmm...
is it the motor? can't be only it... it's only 200 cubics bigger!
how about the frame? or rear frame?
rims?
forks?
exhaust?
Swing arm?
Fairings?
Fenders?
Breaks?
Electrical systems?
Cooling system?
wirings?
Is it the biggest and heaviest battery in the world ?

Do you find some other parts ....
Tell me what really makes the weight difference?

Yes,
Swft and White Lightening... Carbon CF is okey,
but it would be interesting to compare those original
parts of the moped, why and what really makes
our ZX hevier...
So
have to start to take it apart,
measure everything and then compare, compare....

But still the question remains... Why is it too much heavier !!! ?

That's a good question! If I were to hazard a guess, I'd prolly say this:

Exhaust - 20.0 lbs
Ram Air - 2.0 lbs
RA Covers - 1.0 lb
Ashtray 0.5 lb
Wheels - 22.0 lbs
Gas Tank - 6.0 lbs
Chain Guard - 1.0 lb

How is the fix for the leaky gas tank coming? Did Rico take care of you?

If not, wonder if shooting your tank off to Hans might be an idea (hint!)

The fix was to rethread the tank to accept a proper metric fitting. The two problems that I observed with the tank are as follows:

1. Return line fitting: The fitting that was removed from the stock tank did not fit/seal properly in the carbon fiber tank copper receiver. Mike Velasco tapped the copper receiver out to fit a new return line fitting.

2. The compression nuts in each side of the tank (where the tank cover is fastened to the tank, using the two large allen bolts) are too deep, hence not allowing the allen bolts to be used. The solution is to either use longer bolts or cut up your tank cover - NOT!

So what do you guys think? Should I get the Carbon Fiber tank from Safetech, despite all the initial probs getting the tank, and then the fitment/fitting issues?

Glad to hear you got the other issues straightened out. I take it you guys fixed it yourselves. So far Safetech's business practices seem iffy at best; that's why I didn't buy anything from him. My phone calls & e-mails seemed to indicate someone who wanted to do right, but perhaps did not have the resources? I chose not to take the chance...

However, Safetech appears to be the only game in town right now excepting Sebimoto. I know they make a carbon cover, along w/the rest of the bodywork, but it's expensive & no gas tank. http://www.sebimoto.com Yoyodyne is the US distributor...

I'd try to get in touch in Rico, see if he can fix the existing problems (including communications), & then you have to make a decision. He must have the mold made up now, so perhaps the next one will be quicker/easier...?

and the grand total is!!????

Swft,

What is the total price of your 12R weight loss plan???

( If not the exact $$$, a guesstimate would work... )

The big ticket items would be the exhaust , and the wheels both in weight AND price I assume.

This may go against everything that this board is about, but my box stock '01 12R has yet to get ABOVE 7500rpm,
and I find the power F*cking incredible, ( I am at 1400 miles, and I am hesitant about opening it up YET, break-in issues and all..)

Tripod -

I'll see if I can get this all figured out.

Hans CF $ 1000
CF Tank $ 1000
LP CF Front Fender $ 200
Race Tech Forks $ 350
Ohlins Shock $ 800
Scotts Damper $ 400
Marchesini Wheels $ 1200
Aluminum Wheel Spacers $ 50
Muzzy Exhaust $ 900
K&N Air Filters $ 65
Muzzy 1270 Kit $ 1180
Muzzy Billet Clutch Basket $ 350
Muzzy Clutch Kit $ 300
Muzzy Block Off Plates $ 35
Muzzy Adj. Cam Sprockets $ 180
FSD Undertail $ 180
ZX 9R/6R Mirrors $ ??
Zero Gravity DB $ ??
PIAA Extreme White 135/125W $ ??
Taillight Integrator $ 40
Gilles Rearsets $ 350
Galfer Wave Rotors $ 365

Total: $ 8765

What do ya get for that?

A ZX12R that weighs 55 lbs less than stock:

Accelleration - 1270 motor good for 190+ hp

Handling - Ohlins shock / RaceTech forks / Marchesini Wheels / Scotts Damper = turns quicker, tracks through corners, stable at all speeds

Stopping - Galfer Wave Rotors look cool!

Ergonomics - DB is more protection, rearsets allow better foot position.

Vision - PIAA Lighting lets you see much farther down the road.

Looks - FSD Undertail & CF Ram air distinguish it from most others!
