Checking Valve Clearances????????

Have any of you guys checked your valve clearances. My bike is at around 7k miles and I've got all the plastic off while doing various mods, and figured now would be a good time to do this. At first I wasn't gonna mess with it, but after talking to Harry today I figure I should.

Is it that tough to do??? I need to learn how to do this anyway..........

I've got a service manual on cd so I have some info to go by, but no hands on experience in this area at all.

Can anyone help me out????

Checking them isn't that difficult. Re-shimming is a bit more involved. The service manual is hard to beat for info. You'll need an angled set of feeler gauges to accurately check the gap.

Yeah....

Yeah I knew I'd probably need a different type of feeler gage than what I've got. I've got the little fold-up set. I'd like to atleast check the clearances, but I don't think I'd tackle any shimming that might be necessary unless I had someone who had experience on hand to guide me through it. I will come up with something I guess.

Anybody else have any suggestions, pics?

The hardest part is that once you determine that a shim is out of spec is removing the cams and then putting them back in timed correctly. You will also need a small magnet to remove the shims and make sure they do not fall somewhere. But the cam timing is the really important thing and you WILL need a service manual to guide you thru that.

I did it........

I think it was a lot of damned work but I made it. Big Mike came over and lended me a hand, and he recorded all the clearances on paper as I made the checks.

You sure have to take a lot of shit off to get to the point where you can take the valve cover off!!!!!!!!! I have one valve clearance that is almost tight and that was a #2 intake valve, the one closest to #1 cylinder. It was .006, a very tight .006 at that. But it is within spec, and everything else was more in the middle of the range. So I think I'll be ok until 15k then I figure I may have to get some shims handy. Then again maybe I won't

yeah Harry I do .....

Harry,
Went to Napa and got a good set of feeler gages ($11) and went to work. Big Mike came over and helped me and we had a good time while we did it. I'm trying to talk him into us tricking that FZ1 out and trying to get some more power out of it!!!!!

Also put the Yoshimura pipe on last night. Man that thing is a beautiful pipe. I hate that the thing has to be covered up with plastic. You gonna be around the house tomorrow? (in NC)

Gotta roll out right now, taking the family over to jackson and going out to eat. Then I'm going to one of my favorite places "Lowes". That's fucking sad eh?

Lowes is ok if you need home improvenent stuff

Yea, I'll be around tomorrow. We just got back from watching Black Hawk down. We both liked it , Travis said it was too gory in a couple of parts.
It was in the 60's blue sky and no bike to ride,That sucks.

Yeah.....

I had to get some stuff for the house, Lowes is hard to beat in that area.

Man it was beautiful here today, temps had to be near 60* I'd say. Too bad my bike isn't ready to ride yet. I'd have loved to went for a good blast today.

I'll give you a shout tomorrow.
