Valve adjustment questions.
I was wondering how often do I need to adjust the valves on a 2000 ZX12R. I'm the second owner of this bike and the previous owner installed a PCIII with a full Akro exhaust! I'm thinking if that guy had those things installed, he sure to have had the valves adjusted. How much should I be spending to have the valves adjusted? One shop said he would remove the cams and adjust the valves to the max for $350.00.The bike has 9k miles. And can't he just adjust the valves to specs? What does he mean by adjusting the valves to the max? The shop has no dyno, and I would prefer to take the bike to a shop to dyno it to make sure things are good! Any Advice out there? Valves should be adjusted every 12000km (7.5k miles). And if the bike has only 9k miles I woudn't count on them being checked if You don't know for sure. By maxing them out he probably ment that they would be in the loose side of the specs because it is usually agreed to be better, because the clearances tend to go smaller. To adjust or do any other maintenance(except maybe for mapping) You don't need a dyno.

You can check the valves yourself its not bad to do. Get a service manual and try it.
You shouldnt need any adjustments for at least 15,000 miles and some guys are at 30,000 and there still within spec.
I'm at 18,000 and althou the heads have been completely disassembled a few times they still have all the original shims and are still in spec.
If you do bring it to a shop, tell them you just want them checked. AFTER they give you the price to CHECK the clearances, agree to the price and ask them to write down ALL the clearances on every valve for you.
There doing it anyway so to pick up a pen and document it doesnt cost any more.
I'll put money they will not need adjusting.
