Things I've notice since dumping IE
Disk cleanup no longer grinds to a halt due to gigabyte of temp internet files...
Pages load about twice as fast as before...
Battery lasts longer (much longer) because I'm not spinning the disk drive so much (see first note) so I can surf for a long time while on the battery.

THe crappy thing about firefox that I've found so far is the warning you get if you use shortcuts to URL's from the desktop. I have a couple links setup as shortcuts and I always get an error message whenever I use them. Other than that, I really like the program, and love the tabs....

Uhhh... You do realize you can configure the size of the temp internet files that IE stores? Sounds like the old I D 10 T error if you ask me, there's nothing wrong with IE.
Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings

i use firefox due to the pop-up blocking features.
another nice thing about mozilla is you can alter the number of threads/ports to open to webserver. on fast connection this makes huge difference in webpage display
just two small things that make life alittle better 
the big one is the popups though. 0.0000 popups. but sites that rely on a real popup (say, bikeland and the IM window) can be unblocked and work normally.
the only complaint i have with firefox so far is that IE-specific java tags don't work exactly as expected (but that's why they are IE specific..
the 'hate IE bandwagon' is not all about ignorance, there are certain features that just workbetter on mozilla IMHO.

slug, try the Google Toolbar in IE, I found it to work better than any Mozilla derivative.

dave: not sure on activex, know any sites that would work to test?
as far as the vulnerability in firefox goes,
type about:config in to address bar
scroll down to "network.protocol-handler.external.shell"
andmake sure it says 'false'
then close and life is good. (mine was already set to false)

I keep getting this strange problem with FireFox - XPCOM:EVENT something or other. It seems to come up after I open up Firefox and browse for a bit. The way it happens is, I browse for a bit - then, nothing seems to downloadn (no pages, nothing) via firefox (or if I open up IE, IE doesn't workeither), so I reboot, and I get this message that XPCOM:EVENT something or other is locked - please terminate. I terminate and re-boot and all is well. Only happens when I use firefox. strange.

How do I increase the "pinging" frequency when trying to download. I read somewhere that downloads speeds can increase if the information is requested more frequently?! Also, I read something about changing the need for file varification as a way to get more data transmitted?!

ra12r, i can only guess that they're talking about making more simultaneous requests. taking the statement "downloads speeds can increase if the information is requested more frequently" at face value, it would definitely be incorrect as u'd jsut be increasing the load on the server (which slows things down of course).
not realyl sure what file verification means. could be talking about client-side cache settings, or file integrity verification. neither would increase actual data transfer speeds. whereever you got that info from, they defintiely need to cough up some details to make any sense.

Okay, my cumulative reading over time has me thinking that there are some parameter changes that one can make to IE in the system level that would increase the speeds. I have dial up and it is slower now at 56k than I was back in the day with 28.8k!!!
But I thought that if the packet verification parameter could be changed then more information could be recieved resulting in faster times for surfing....??
Is there any way to increase the efficiency of IE??

best thing u can do with such a slow connection (assuming your machine isnt ancient too) is make sure compression is enabled for those sites that support it and u could try an accelerator. there are alot of them out there and they're always advertising them. basically they just preload all teh links they can find while you read the current page. for something like this forum it may not be all that useful tho as there are too many links to preload. make sure your cache settings are not set to never cache.
oh, my isp was telling me how i could get something to increase the speed 5x for $5 a month extra. i half suspect it was jsut them implementing the aforementioned compression before passing the data thru my modem, but that's jsut a guess.

They also do a lot of image reformatting...That saves a ton. Take a 24 bit image and render it down to 16 or 8 bit, etc...
