New fines aimed at Parkway speeders

Speeders on the Blue Ridge Parkway are in for steeper fines now $500 up from $150 if park rangers deem the drivers were causing a serious risk to themselves or others.
Tim Francis, district ranger for the southern portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, said the new fine is a much-needed deterrent. Sport bikes are too frequently clocked going "triple digit speeds" on curvy stretches, Francis said. The top speed Francis recalls is 120 mph.
"Not only were they wrecking, but it was ruining other people's experience who were trying to take a casual drive," Francis said.
Last year, rangers were battling a group of professional riders who had a standing challenge to fellow bikers: take the Parkway from Asheville to Swain County, ride the notorious Dragon's Tail in Graham County, and return via the Parkway as quickly as possible.
One speeder Francis ticketed for $150 replied it was "worth it" for the ride he just took.
"They were looking at it as the cost of an admission ticket," Francis said. "Some of these guys are good riders and could do it, but it was ruining other people's experience. Visitors come from all over the country for nice leisurely rides, not to watch the races."
These excessive speeders pose threats to bicyclists, backpackers, pedestrians taking pictures near overlooks and wildlife foraging along the roadside, Francis said
When the $150 fine seemed too lenient given the speed, rangers required the speeder to appear in court, where a steeper fine could be levied.
The federal judges were consistently "handing down $500 tickets for aggravated speeding," said John Garrison, chief ranger for the Parkway. So this month, U.S. Chief District Court Judge Graham Mullen changed the law, allowing rangers to write speeders up a $500 ticket per offense on the spot.
"We're recognizing the unique and high dangers represented by these aggressive driving behaviors," said Garrison. Garrison said the amount of the ticket will be based on the ranger's discretion of the circumstances someone going 60 mph swerving and doing wheelies could be as grievous as another biker going 80 mph.
Extremely risky driving could earn a $1,000 fine, as rangers can levy $500 for speeding and another $500 for the separate offense of reckless driving. In cases where $1,000 still doesn't seem like enough, rangers can continue to require the speeder to come to court, Francis said. Francis has taken a speeder to court and the judge handed down a $1,500 fine.
If the speeder wants to contest a fine, they always have the option of coming to court, Garrison said. Offenses on the Parkway are heard in federal court, as the Parkway is federal property.

I think they will only agravate the riders and instead of stopping for the 150 dollar fine before; riders will only try to loose the officers instead of getting a 500 dollar fine

Well, that just blew my 'cost of admission' spreadsheet. Not worth it anymore.
Shit, buy a clapped out race bike with no title. Run for fun, then when your luck runs out dispose of properly in one of the ravines or off one of the mountains.
If they are trailered (preferred) your buddy can pick you up later.
There you go. If you just GOTTA haul ass on that road, that's how to do it. And if you run and get away, you get away.

Well, I guess we're extremely risky drivers cause Rick and I both got fined $1000 for our offense last Sept. The thing about it was we were still warming up our tires, if we'd have been at speed when we got caught? Oh boy.

you're on a sportbike, that means your ALWAYS extremely risky...
chalk up another road to avoid....
you folks really need to head up to 116 next gap trip, just take it easy, real technical, also the road isn't in as good of shape as gap. but it's a nice riding road.

Fuck the BRP Rangers and any other cocksucker that had anything to do with this. That is exactly why I didn't ride the Parkway in May, nor do I care to ever ride that MF again. Chris and I got a raw deal IMHO, though it could've certainly been worse, it could have also been better.

Been a while since I rode the PW, but a few years back while living in the Roanoke, Virignia area I noted that the BRP rangers were the ONLY law enforcement agency still using old X-band radar. These are about the easiest to detect with a cheap-o detector.
The rest of Virginia uses mostly Ka - and I've NEVER encountered laser in VA.
Keep that in mind - always use protection. Mine is a BEL.

It was a decent road, the tunnels were cool, lol. That 270° deal under the bridge was neat, but that was on a different road.
Not something I'd go that far to ride again. Glad I did though, thanks Steve.

The BRP is one of my favorite roads. Man strafing that 70 some miles from the mountain to Asheville with Rick and Harry are rides I will never forget. Awesome stuff. RIP BRP.

Indeed you did Mattsterbateyourself. Shit we'd hit that road once each trip, during the week and never have any problems. We'd go over the mountain pissing every fucking car off passing them, then burn up the parkway at ludicrous speeds then do the Isle of Man TT on I-40 all the way back to 321. To be honest, those were my favorite days. A long ride, but a good one. I still think I may try to venture over there. The mistake we made in Sept last year was that we had one great run there on like Wed but decided to go BACK again on Saturday and got popped, bad move going on the weekend.

No, they don't take them. And there are no points associated with being caught with contraband. I have used RDs for 10 years in all my vehicles and been caught twice ... ticketed once.

Actually Rick and Chris werent that far a head of us when they got popped by Ulrey......they had checked out and a few of the rest of use were fixing to do the same when we saw the ranger pull out from the over look.....we just got ourselves slowed down......it was a raw deal for sure.....
One of my favorite rides was this past Cherohola run that we made....even though i was on the 600 I had a blast...cant wait for septembers trip.....
