ZX-12R FI light
Hello guys; LOOKING FOR SOME HELP HERE.
I have a 2000 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R. Bought new in 2000, NEVER RACED, No mods other than a Scorpion Canister. all maint. done at a Kawasaki dealer.
Recently my Fuel Injector light started to "shimmer" off and on. Ive been to 3 Kawasaki dealers now ONLY to have them tell me the same thing. "There is nothing wrong with your FI system", if so then 1 of 3 things would happen.
(1)The FI light would stay on continiously (it does not)
(2)The FI light would come on, flash 2 times then pause
before repeating
(3)The FI light would come on, flash 3 times, then pause
before repeating.
Im told by them, UNLESS 1 of those 3 things are happening that they can not READ a FI code with their diognistic equip.
The ONLY thing ive noticed is a popping sound from the exhaust system since installing the Canister. The bike pulls as strong as it ever did. The best I can describe the popping sound is that it's much like "snorting" the engine on a v8 car (mustang/Z-28) and letting go of the gas.....
HOWEVER, even after taking the Scorpion Canister off and placing the stock one back on, the FI light still does the same thing... Is it possible my FI mapping has been thrown off?

Mapping-?, No. Sounds like a wiring fault somewhere. Maybe a loose wire in a connector at a sensor or a ground. Go over the plugs and harnesses very methodically. Look especially for a pin in a plug that is pushed back, not making good contact.

Sound advise....
I had a similar problem on my '04 when I replaced the tail lights with Liebertek leds. After install my bike would crank and idle real rough and after 15 seconds the FI light would come on......
$400 later the dealership informs me that I bent a pin to the #4 Cylinder and the bike was only firing on 3...
Dealership fixed the pin and harness to the cpu and she is purring like a kitty again and FI light is off.

Diagnostic equipment???? You mean a piece of wire? Seriously, all you need is a piece of wire attached to a good ground. Your "diagnostic connector" is a single Yellow wire (I think it's yellow) on the harness comng from the ECU in the tail section. Remove the rear seat and the glove box and locate the wire on the RH side of the tail section. The wire has a bullet connector with a clear plastic sheath over it. You will probably need to get the ECU into "Dealer mode 2", which will read history codes (old codes, the light does not need to be on right now for this to work). This is done by repeatedly opening and grounding the Yellow wire (key on engine off) (the book says more than 5 times in two seconds). The FI light will then flash any codes in a "long flash-short flash" manner. The long flashes are the first number in the code (2 long flashes means the code is "20 something") and the short flashes are the second number (2 long flashes and 3 short flashes means the code is a 23). This will repeat until the key is cycled off. Once you know the code, diagnosis and isolation of the problem is possible. My first guess is the gear position sensor.
It is possible that the problem occurred too quickly and then corrected itself for the ECU to store the code. If this is the case then you will need to get this problem to occur on a more regular basis. Sometimes this means waiting until the problem gets worse.
