Is there a real problem here? What happens if oil capacity can't supply enough oil for the increased pressure/flow. The biggest problems come from starvation/low capacity.

Koz

BINGO!!!
I agree with Koz 100%...

FYI...now that I have another 12-motor apart (waiting for parts-AKA-money) ...
I don't see how the larger volume 2002 oil pump can "R&R" into the older motors
I'll post pictures later but...the oil pump housing itself is...PART OF THE LOWER CASE half and can't be removed!!!
I've been wrong about lots of things before but...I just don't see it being a "swap"...

Damned good thread........

I like these kind of threads. Pros and cons getting hashed out amongst us gearheads.

My oil temperature in the pan has never been over 150 degrees. I've installed oil temperature and oil pressure gauges with high reading recall. Haven't been for a ride since. Can't hurt though.

So let me repeat what i think i just learned,
"to place a shim in the relief valve will NOT increase my pressure to my bearings..." ?!?!?!
But, it will increase the pressure required to cause the valve to release....?!
Why is the need for a release valve there anyway then if it is not regulating the oil pressure?
Interjection for the why bearing problems.....has anyone had a bearing problem that has not advanced the timing?!

Eventually the system oil pressure will rise. You just have to get to the point, RPM'S, where the pressure release valve was opening. With it shimmed, a higher system pressure will be reached before the release valve opens. The benifit is to ensure an adaquate oil supply to the bearings under high loading conditions. The bearings are actually a controlled leak. Larger gap = faster leak, a higher system pressure ensures plenty of oil flow. To put it another way, if a higher volume pump was available, oil pressure would also increase though at lower RPM'S (up till the relief valve opens) due to the controlled leaks being the same size. If adequate oil flow exists at 5/10th's riding then shimming the stock pump would rob less HP than a higher volume pump at 5/10's.

Well, hold on. I have to sift through all that crap before I open my keyboard.
Essentially Y2 and Koz have it right.
The shim only delays the pop-off point. It limits the maximum oil pressure possible in the system to prevent damage due to blockage, very cold high vis oil, etc. If you do not reach that point the shim is irrelevant.
I'm not of the opinion that there is a "problem". We see more cranks than anyone but Falicon (1361 cores) and I've yet to see one that shows an imminent problem. As I said on Mad Mike's engine thread, I think most of what you see is within the normal parameters of a mass produced engine that has the crap beat out it. Yeah, I'm talkin to you. You know who you are!
