New Job, Moving
in 3 weeks i'll be starting a new job, located north and west of oak ridge, tennessee
i'll be moving before that, quitting current job on the 2nd of august
after a year and a half of searching via headhunters, finally closure. the current job i enjoy, but the future is bleak for manufacturing jobs in the US. plainly put, we cannot pay the workers what they want to be paid, because it is worth more than the parts they make....sooooooo something's gotta give.
this should be a wakeup call to those in manufacturing positions: get some sort of other skill set to fall back on if the factory youwork at decides to close or consolidate.
Anyway the new job draws from experience gained as a power plant operator in navy, as well as PLC and industrial controls learned at my current job. i'll be working on brand new wind turbines, the total facility output will be somewhere artound 27MW on a good day. hopefully we have many many good days
a picture of the job site (the 3 windmills shown belong to the TVA, i won't be dealing with those 3) with the can in foreground that gets buried and concreted in to provide the foundation for the towers
15 new units will be built on the top of the mountain.
http://www.invenergyllc.com/wind.htm
the turbines (check out hte turbine assembly video...under 'products' tab, V90)
http://www.vestas.com/index.htm
the job title sounds easy, (wind turbine technician) but hte job description includes lots of other things (i'll be the only one from Invenergy at the job site, so i have to manage the site, the normal upkeep (roads, right of wyas etc) parts purchasing, local interface etc (and what is great is that the mayor of oliver springs has already started extorting the haulers for money)
anyway it's along hte same lines of what i have been doing TECHNICALLY but the management side will be new. should be a great learning experience any way you look at it.
anyway if i am not around much (and i haven't been either) it is due to the impending move.

Sweet. So I assume you'll be at DGVIII come Sept? I'm a powerplant operator in a papermill, sounds easy enough but theres a lot of other stuff to deal with too. Last year I had a line on a job at the Kingston coal fired plant(TVA) but didn't really follow up on it since my oldest was a HS senior. I just heard the TVA is laying off about 100 dam operators. Maybe staying here wasnt such a bad move. The real bummer is Dad retired and is building East of Knoxville in Dandrige. At least I can jump on his 12 when I visit.
BTW Get Lucky to take you over Brushy Mtn., hwy 11 I think, about 1/2 hr east of you. Better'n the Gap.

Welcome to East Tennessee Slug!
I believe you'll like living here, 'course as much time as you've spent here, you probably already know that.
Your new turbine blades are presently scattered all over the highway due to a trucking accident, heard they are in good shape though.
Scooter...
Actually they offered us hydro operators a multi-skilled option and almost all of the 100 took it so no layoffs. I applied for the RIF but couldn't get it 'cause they need us around for a little while longer.
Hope your folks are enjoying the area, I'll give your Dad a shout when I'm able to ride some.

Good luck in your new job slug. There a lot of those wind generators on the mountains in wales where my X wife lives (The english X)I've ridden dirt bikes in the mountains in wales(1990-93) right underneath those things, They are huge.
I hope to see you at the next DG event as it will be my last one for awhile.Maybe greenglen can make it to.

OOOOH
A seven-mile stretch of the Foothills Parkway in Blount County between U.S. Highway 321 and U.S. Highway 129 will reopen Thursday -- several months ahead of schedule. Extensive flooding in May 2003 closed the road between Walland and Chilhowee after a landslide left a vertical drop 200 feet down and almost 140 feet across the face of the road.

Cool pics. What kind of wind speed is needed to turn one of those things? 1.8 MW x 15 = 27 MW. 1.8 MW each is pretty impressive. Our little steam unit makes 28-29 MW maxxed out, which it usually is. Only twin counter rotating radial flow unit of this design that has yet to grenade, so I'm told. Gives ya a nice warm fuzzy feeling standing up next to it LOL.

nice hehe
4-5 mph to start i think, will have to research.
the blade is designed for low-mid speed wind sites
the ones up top today were spinning 15 rpm, and you couldn't feel the breeze it was so light

I see a nice new dualsport in your future. Hope you don't have to climb to the top of every one of those each day.

Slug, now deep do the concrete "footings", or bases have to be in the ground to hold those suckers up?

KTM has a big selection of bikes with small tweaks that make them better on pavement or dirt. Wide, wide, selection. Biggest is the 950 Adventure.
Other options are to take the smaller bikes (400's 450's) and make them road legal. Best if you are going to spend MOST of your time in single track with small stints of pavement.
BMW has the new 1200 GS. But it weighs as much as a 12R. Great on pavement and some dirt roads.
Naturally, cheap is the KLR 650 and Honda 650. Big, heavy bikes. I've been dusted more than once on single track by guys riding 650's that know what they are doing (been riding 30+ years in the dirt).
I'm going through the same time, slug. Trying to determine what I want - but I also add in the complexity of taking the bike to the track for some motard action! I want a bike that does it ALL.
