kz1000 141 hp less than 400lbs
This was the cover of the November 1978 issue of Cycle.
The Vetter Superbike was built around a Kawasaki KZ1000 engine and a standard fuel tank. Other than that, it was a an elaborate remake of a stock motorcycle. It was tuned by the late Pierre Des Roche and it made around 141 hp at the rear wheel. It had 12" discs on the front, a 5 speed close ratio transmission and weighed in at (if memory serves on this one) just under 400 pounds. The stock version was 565 lbs wet. Pierre did a lot of trick stuff to it and made it light, fast - and dependable - which is important when you're defending the #1 plate.

..personally, I think the gas tank shape of that era (I had a '75 Z1-B..and I was 19  ) was sex on steel...

My bike weighed about 420 and Had a stock frame modified by Rob North (The same person that modified the Vetter and Race Crafters frame with TZ750 Large tapered rollers and had 2 down tubes on each side with a bent by hand .080 Chromolly plate swingarm. Of course Morris Mags and 13 inch Cast Iron rotors made by Kozman with 4 piston Brembo's. The rear brake was 12 inches with Anti-Dive (Full float with the reaction rod adjustable above the swing arm pivot. (the bike looked like a Z-1R) I had the faring mounted to the frame and the radiator in the tail section that was kicked up real high. The engine was done by Pops I think Fuijo actually did the porting (At least that is what he said to me). I used EI Blue Magnum Carbs modified by Pappy Edmonds (The man that invented the "Lake", Posa-Fuel, Lectrons The man that invented the "Square slide" Carbs. I also had the Hand bent yosh pipe and we think the engine made about 140 to 150 HP (Maybe 130 to 135 at the rear wheel. I used a Fox AIr Shok that I modified to handle the banking at Charlotte Motor SPeedway where I finished 3rd in my heat race behind Eddie Lawson and RIchard Chambers. I finished 11th in the main race. I was also as High as 6th place before I got tired at Road Atlanta and again finished 11th! I will try to post the picture of Lawson, Rainey, Cooley and 1 other person and then me at the start of the Road Atlanta Race start where we are all climbing the hill in turn 1 at the start of the race. I started on the 3rd row and was 5th into turn 1 and was in 6th by the middle of the race. Trust me when I say I was really a fast Old man back in the day (I was around 39 or 40 years old at the time)
Rob Muzzy hated the EI Carbs but could not make more HP with the Keihn Smooth Bores (How ever you spell Keihn) but the Keihns were more bottom end control. That picture brings back a lot of memories. I will post a picture later of me at Ponoco with my Z-1R It was a beautiful bike which allowed me to pass some of the Hondas ridden by Freddie SPencer on the banking at Charlotte or pull away from ROberto Pietrie at Loudon (Old course)

I had a 1974 Z-1a when I was 19. I weighed 135lbs.
