Dyno day: 48mm TB's & Bear stacks

Thanks to the speedy arrival of VH's care package (o-rings) my bike went on JohnnyChees's dyno yesterday for "test n' tune"

The test was on 48mm TB's and various combos of tall/short Bear stacks. A/F tuning was done on the winner.

Objective was peak hp for drags.

last place - all longs
3rd loser - shorts on 2,3; longs on 1,4
2nd loser - all shorts
dyno hp winner: shorts on 1,4; longs on 2,3

BIG caveat here: what works on the dyno is NOT always best for the track. For example on my bike an A/F of a titch over 13:1 adds 4-6 peak dyno hp, but 12.3-6 gives best 1/4 mph.

Sooooo... Initially I will run the longs in the middle but will also test all shorts at the track to compare real world results.

Johnny did only 14 carefully planned and documented pulls as the map has had many, many development sessions previously.

Many, many interesting observations can be made from the info, here's just a few:

1. Winner combo Hp has a very gentle uphill slope from 9500 to the limiter going from 214 to 219 or so.

2. 48mm TB's gained 2-3 hp peak, 2-5 hp mid rage over the 46mm TB's, even tho dyno room temp was 10-15 degrees warmer (94 yesterday).

3. all shorts gained 2-3hp and shifted tq peak from 7800 to 8000 wrt all longs

4. all longs made the A/F go from 12.6 (base map) to 12.1

5. short 1,4, longs 2,3 took just a bit of fuel to get to 12.5.

JohnnyCheese is "in his element" doing this type of dyno testing tuning; You DA MAN, JC!!!

Now to locktite everything and go to the track, maybe next weekend as HRP gates are shut for the weekend.

Oh, mods to the motor??? It's easier to say what HASN'T been done: no juice, no turbo.

so.. is the best for a stock engine with PC-IIIt and Muzzy the winner in the above test? Damnit. Now I have ANOTHER mod to be interested in . just when I thought I reached BikeVanna.

entropy,
That's the same results we came up with a few weeks ago on the dyno. Only difference for me was that all longs gave me the best dragstrip results over the all shorts. Since I have a stock arm I only leave at 4,500rpm and the longs gave me more midrange. I haven't tried the combo set yet on the strip and it will be a while since I'm walking wounded right now.
Thanks for the info and your time & trouble.
Dan

OKB,
I have a 10" arm and with nearly 100hp on tap at 5000rpm so mid range isn't where I am looking for more power. Like you, I am leaving at 4500, and letting the clutch fly.

Going WOT right outa the hole seems to give pretty good results for me but i don't like how high (a foot or so) the front wheel is getting. I have cut the lowers more and lowered the rear another .5"; time to try higher rpm launches

Hey, sorry to hear about yr foot

DP,
i really wouldn't think that a stock motor would respond the same way, but who knows??? It's only $$$$ and time for you to find out, eh???

great info man, and a big high-five to ya for sharing it.....

My memory is really fading, but, these two items really stuck out for me.

3rd loser - shorts on 2,3; longs on 1,4

4. all longs made the A/F go from 12.6 (base map) to 12.1

I was thinking that JC's testing with the O2 sensor on each head pipe had the outers being much leaner than the inner 2 cylinders.

My sloping head is making me think that having the long stacks on the outside would be ideal given your findings.

It'll be super-interesting to see your track times!

BA,
thx for the high-five; given my 2-fingered typing style and all...

Your comments mirror what JC was saying. He was pondering over the O2 headpipe results and what the stack tests should have shown and asked me: "you know what I mean?". "kinda", says I, being the mechanical dumbass I am.

JC wanted to pull the mid pipe and do AF on each header but that hi temp silicone sealer has set up like cement, no way.

Like you say, track will tell, maybe this weekend. Woo-hoo!!!!

2. 48mm TB's gained 2-3 hp peak, 2-5 hp mid range over the 46mm TB's, even tho dyno room temp was 10-15 degrees warmer (94 yesterday).

I didn't do same day, before after tests because I had the 48's mounted when I showed up for the pulls. But everything else besides the TB change was the same.
