Anyone use a ChatterBox or any other intercom system?
I was wondering if it is worth it to buy a ChatterBox. Me and a couple of buddies was wanting to buy a set. And can you get a head set that fits inside of the helmet and attach the transmitter to your belt. I really dont want to mount it to my helmet. I will be very grateful for any info..

We have 26 people in our Riding group!!
Almost everyone of us has a Chatterbox. 2 mile range!
HJC-FRS Multi-sport +
We all can talk to each other. The unit's are awesome until you get on the highway for some highspeed fun. After 80mph...they are almost useless!! And they have a Mic sensor knob...Make sure if your jumping on the highway that all the guy's turn the sensitivity down or it's nothing but wind noise in everyone's ears...
I still recommend that your group get's them because it is very helpful if you have a slowpoke in the group or if you get seperated!
Now a couple of the guy's bought the 5 mile range unit last year...(latest and greatest) and were very un-happy. I am not sure if HJC has improved this unit, but they found that everywhere they tried to place the mic., they still had alot of wind noise feedback in our ears....
The unit tucks down into any full face helmet. You can buy units for open faced helmets as well. The HJC helmets come with ear pockets made to slip the earphones in.
I am sure that Spenser Cycle, Barnaby Cycle or someone has them in stock!!
I had an issue with mine and had to send it back one month after the warranty ran out....They replaced my unit for free and may I add very quickly..... NO hassles!! I was very pleased dealing with customer service!!
Man. I an pulling a RedElk!!
Angi
Any more question's???
We have been using these units for the past two years and we all are very pleased.

only way to go
We use the same type as Angie, but ONLY use the push to talk buttons.(the voice activated system is "worthless".)We run the ptt line down thru our left sleeve and put the button on our index finger w/ the button pointing inward. You can just roll your wrist clockwise to activate the button,or use your left thumb. This way you're not connected to the bike w/ any wires! And one more time.......once you use a communicator, you'll wonder how you made it all those years w/out one!

I used the Chatterbox a few years back and the VOX was useless, range wasn't too good either. I'm assuming the newer ones are better. I'd consider the new ones if I were shoping. More people probably have the Chatterbox unless they snowmobiledue to the groomer beacon on Collet. But as for Collets' VOX, it works at 100+ on my snowmobile. The trick is put the mic right next to your lips and speak straight into it. The service has been great and any upgrades are free. One thing to stay away from is units wired into the bike for power, engine noise can be a problem.

Can you get a mic that attaches to the inside of your helmet and attach the transmitter to you belt ot somewere else. Or do you have to attach that big block of a transmitter to your helmet? I would hate to have to do that.

Collet Communicator 900 on sale right now.
I have been researching communicators and have concluded that the Collet is the one for me. I am ordering a pair tomorrow. I am going to order the Communicator 900 with the second channel. Read about them at http://www.collettcommunicators.com/
They are on sale right now at http://www.collettcommunicators.com/900mhz.htm#5 for $159.95us.
They are giving a discount on orders of 6 or more and dropping the price to $139.95us and including a private club channel for free. Also included in any order right now are NI-MH batteries.
So when I call them tomorrow I am going to see if they will give us a group price even though we would be individual orders, and set us up with the same club channel.

The unit clipped to your helmet isnt even noticable. And once your familiar with the controls they are much easier to use than if they were on your belt. The battery pac sits in your pocket/belt.

Throat Mikes?
Anyone know where to get a good "throat mike" unit? It seems to me this type of unit may give better results on a piped zx-12r because they are not "open mikes" that have a tendancy to pick up wind or other background noises.

Throat Mikes????
Never heard of that but we ride with the ChatterBox multisport also. The VOX system can be quirky at higher speeds due to wind noise and exhaust but other than that it works pretty good. I haven't tried the push-to-talk function yet but I've heard good things about it. I like the fact that you can hook up a cd/mp3/tape player to it and listen to tunes while riding. I never leave home without mine, in fact I rarely take it off my helmet. I also get irritated when the others forget theirs and I have to break my neck to communicate with them. Why have the danmn thing if you're not going to use it??!?!?! After using them on a group ride you'll perfer to do it that way all the time. Another nice feature is that the now popular hand held two-way communicators works with them also, so if there are some cagers in the group they can communicate too.

The unit I saw attached to your helmet with screws. I don't want to drill any holes in my helmet. Is this the only way to attach it to your helmet or can you use velcro or something else?

Almost all the ones for helmets have a strong clip. Like one of those sheetmetal type paperclips.

No Drilling Necessary.....
There are allen screws that hold the clip together as it clamps to the helmet and a rubber pad to protect the helmet finish. The unit slides on and off the clip that clamps to the helmet. These units are quite nice and extremely functional. Check one out at you nearest accessory store. You will be very satisfied if you get one.
