Who's wearing one piece leathers?

I was about to order a set of custom Vanson one piece leathers when someone told me I'd regret it. He says two piece is the way to go for the street/highway. According to him (and it kinda makes sense), the first time I stop at a gas station to take a dump and have to peel a one piece suit down onto a floor covered in piss, I'll wish I was wearing a two piece. So fellers, what's the advantages of either one?

...I'd say a GOOD two-piece would be the way to go on the street...and do your MAJOR fish feeding at your house if at all possible....

Habits due to one piece leathers

Rather the years, I'll put it in miles...

2 piece - 20,000
1 piece - 100,000

It's kinda funny when I think about the things that I do because I wear a AGV Rage one-piece. Evertime I get ready to ride, I'll walk around the house for up to a half hour, just so I can do a "number 2" before I put my leathers on. It's become almost "second nature" that I don't even think about it any more. Then again, I also eat very little or nothing at all, before or during my ride. This too, I don't even think about.

I've had to geat rather creative, just to take a piss. Again, it's something I usually have to take care of before I go, but I still will have to make at least one piss break during the day's ride. Sometimes two.

Because of this "fact", I actually have over 50 bathrooms marked as waypoints on my GPS III. Each with a "Red Elk Grade" on it. Some, I'll do a "#2" at and some I won't. Some, I'd rather piss in my leathers then use their bathroom.

The twisted part about it is that I could problably write a book on the public bathrooms of small towns in Arkansas. There's actually some places where their bathrooms are cleaner and nicer then the ones I have in my own home. They actually have "soft" toilet paper and several hand towels. Some even have scented CANDLES in them. Rather weird.

Still, anyway you look at, going to the bathroom is by far a bigger hassle with a one-piece. On hot days, it's also a hassle to just get the upper part off to cool down. Hell, I've worked up a sweat just putting them on.

All the same, I'm on my third set of one-piece leathers and I couldn't even dream of fitting back into my two-piece. Since I wear a 56/58 (in u-a-peein' sizes), it's become a little harder to find one-peice of the rack.

Will this cause me to look into a two piece? No way! Even though today's two-piece leathers are far better then they used to be (many racing associations will now allow two piece leathers), I will always continue to wear one-piece. I really can not give you a valid reason why. With a good set of two-piece, they can be just as safe as any one-piece.

For steet/highway riding, one is most likely as good as the other. About the only way you could get hurt wearing a two-piece and not a one piece is if you slid backwards on your stomach and the front of the jacket rolled up. How often does that happen?

Still not enough for me to even consider switching to a two-piece. I gladly accept all the hassles for that little bit of "perceived" additional safety. My next set will also be a one-piece. Even if this fat boy has to start shelling out the big bucks to get them custom made.

Just a FYI on two piece leathers. If you want to do a track day and need "race legal" leathers you'll need a 360 zipper and even with it it's not an ideal safety situation.

I had the same thought process about one vs. two, I can use the two piece jacket without the pants, I can get in and out easier, I can...... Well after all that it really comes down to what you like better. Try them both if you can and make the best decision for you. I don't wear mine much when I street ride anyway, I bought them for the track and known days of planned hard riding. Of course fully perforated for the FL weather helps too. I'll post a picture of them if you want.

FWIW - I went with the one piece, and I avoid bathrooms in Arkansas.

I've got a One piece Vanson...

I ordered it right before the Gap2 and was foolishly expecting it to come in time for the event. I found out that they make tall sizes and they make fat sizes, they do not make off the rack tall and fat sizes so I went the custom route.

After watching my riding buddies struggling to get out of their one piece suits just to take a piss, I saw that the reason they were having so much trouble was that the suit has a very small opening with the single zipper. Vanson has a suite style called the Volante which has two zippers. Basically the whole front of the suit zips out and flaps down (the "hinge" of the flap is past your crank, thus enabling easy ingress/egress/pissing.

It's got so many damn holes in it that wearing it in the South Georgia heat is like wearing jeans and a jacket... not bad untill you stop. The one thing I dont like is that for $1600 you would figure they could put a freekin pocket in the damn thing.

See ya at Gap3

2 piece for me

I have Vanson 2 piece leathers that are zipped all the way around the waist and are legal for competition. So many times I have thought how glad I am that I didn't get 1 piece leathers.

I like my 2 pc much better. I can wear just the jacket
for casual day. I can remove the jacket if i stop to eat of visit, and it still meets track requirements. If i only had one suit it would be a 2 pc, no doubt. If it is to much hassle i am likely to skip it, so i make safety gear easy and comfortable to wear. my .02

2pc AGV Torino and a 2 pc Fieldsheer. I like being able to take the jacket off when I stop for lunch. Check that the waist zipper is nice and sturdy. I wore my buds Modena 1 pc once and the less bulk around the waist was more comfey.

One vs. Two

I have both one and two piece suits I wear depending on what I'm going to do and where I'm going to do it. If I'm going to the track or do some serious knee dragging it's the Joe Rocket all the way. If I'm just going to cruise and lean in on the occasional corner I wear the two peice. The one peice fits like a glove and feels secure and less bulky. The two piece is more conveniant for mild daily street use. Hell I'll pull over and just take a dump in the woods as opposed to dropping my leathers in some bathroonms out there!

...RedElk....just like my dog...walking around before we roll so he can take a dump...he knows the routine....sometimes I swear he forces one out just to get in the car quicker...I know...I see him spying, looking to see if I'm looking...he'll drop a token, not the usual roast beast...too funny, man....you make me laugh, Red...and all this time I always thought you people went #1 and #2 in the Arkansas woods....LOL

I wear a one piece Vanson and I can say that pissing is no problem.
I dont usually have to dump when I ride. But that would be a PITA.
I dont even use bathrooms when were riding. This part of CT is very rural and the side of the road is preffered over a nasty gas station pisshole. No offense to anyone who may own a gas station with a dirty pisser.

This is too cool. I post a question in the morning that has been bugging me all night at work and when I get out of bed BINGO!!! great insight!! Now I have more to go on. Much like Redelk, I can plan when I take care of business. A big wad of Skoal and I will leave the load at home. I gotta say, though, those Vanson options sure add up in a hurry.

Who sez I don't?!?

22348bCVC, if I'm not near one of "Red Elk's 4 Star Crappers", I have no problem pissin' on a tree. Ah, but there brings up another slight "drawback" to having one-piece leathers. I might have to go 20 miles before I can find a "tree" that is "discrete" enough no to scare passing traffic, yet not be too far away from my bike.

As for doin' a "#2" in the woods, I've never had that problem... yet! On thing I did learn from years of setting up off road enduro courses... ALWAYS carry some toliet paper in a ziploc bag (more then enough for a "few" wipes). I still do.

TM, the prices can vary RADICALLY! I've seen top of the line custom made one-piece go for close to $2000. Two-piece sets weren't far behind. Off the rack sets usually start at around $500 and go to around $1100.

Every once and a while, there will be close out sales as manufacturers try to get rid of the inventory of their previous year's styles. If you can find one in your size, you could save up to 50%.

A word of caution on buying close outs. Some of these are "returns" and there could be something wrong with them. It could be a "apperance thing" or there could actually be a tear or blown seam. ALWAYS inspect them closely and try them on if possible, before accepting them.

When I was getting my third set of AGV Rage one-piece on close out (paid $290), the first set that came in had the crotch completely blown out. Since it was the only set they had of that size, they actually had the gaul to suggest I have them repaired locally and they would pay for it. Yeah, RIGHT! Back they went and I just got another pair that was one size up.

Well I have a Bates 2pc. Suit, I will say quality is #1... if any of you have seen it you will know what I mean. I believe that Bates starts at 900. for a standard black custom 2pc. and then the goodies add up. I see my friends in their one pc suits at the track and man they hate it!! I would definatly Not have a one pc suit to peel on and off every time we go down the track!

I have a 2 piece for the street, and a 1 piece for racing. I don't think I would want to race with anything other than a 1 piece.
