Swingarm removal question?
Ok I have front and rear stands for my 12, but obviously the rear stand wont do me any good to take the swingarm off my bike. The service manual says to use a jack, but that is well over $300 bucks for the one they have.
What does everyone recommend I do? Is there any tips from your experience that you can give me for swingarm removal or putting it back in?
How do you put it on a jack? Anyone have any pics of how this looks like?
Also, can you put a bike on a front service stand without a rear?
Is it true that you have to remove your swingarm in order to replace the chain? Cause if so, I was going to replace my chain since my swingarm will be off anyways. I have nearly 20k miles on this stock chain already.
Lots of dumb questions, but hey I'm still learning.

Ok...heres watcha do
Get a set of cinderblocks (or some other large 12" supporting object) and put a set of jackstands on them. Place the set on either side of the bike even with the rear passenger footpegs
Place a 2x4 under the rear footpegs so it rests on the jackstands.
Then remove the rear stand and the tire should hang freely off the ground for you to do whatever you like.
Or you could get really creative and tie the bike from the ceiling (be sure your celing can support this first )
I would not recommend putting a bike on a front stand only IMO.

I don't like stands so much so I worked with tie downs too

The picture is for front but I use it also for the rear.
And Yes if You use OEM chain, it is endless, so You have to remove the swingarm.

Beans... you dont have to remove the swingarm to replace the chain. The rivet masterlinks work well and most aftermarket chains dont come endless link.
If you want a quick and dirty way.... it requires two people. Loosen all the bolts required to remove the swingarm. Then have your helper support the bike on the kickstand. You can put a 1x or 2x4 piece under it to get some more height. Have them tilt the bike on the kickstand while you remove the swingarm and install the new one.
Make sure your helper can hold it for 10mins.. which is about the time it takes to swap it.
Otherwise hang it by the subframe from a ceiling joist or cherry picker.

small import car jack (twist-up type) under right foot peg.
pushes all the weight on the side stand.
Don't get carried away.
