Dumb move of the week. Need advice
Yesterday when I went home at lunch to get the map out of my bike I left the damn ignition on. DOH. So I didn't notice it til last night at 8pm when I saw the Neutral light barely light up. I tried turning her over and nothing. So I thought, no big deal this is a brand new battery, I'll just put my trickle charger on it over night and it'll be fine. Now the charger I have has a red light that is on when charging and as a charge gets better a green light starts flashing and the red light starts flashing until a full charge is acheived then the red light goes off and the green stays on. Well I went in the garage this morning and only the red light is on. CRAP! Is it possible that by having the ignition on all day yesterday that I actually killed the battery so much, a new battery, that it won't take a charge now and I havet o buy ANOTHER one???

It just needs charging, leave it on another day. Trickle chargers are normally 2amp or less, they take time. If your battery was dead, it will take a while to revive it.

Check to make sure it has water in it also. Add if needed with distilled water.

It's a brand new battery Norm, there is water. I will let it go today and if it's still the same this evening I'll do what Steve suggested. Any idea where I'd get that done Steve?

I have made that mistake a couple times... I don't have a trickle charger... I jumped it and got some life back into it letting it run and then rode it till charged again... My battery is still the original in a 2000 bike... Did it once about 2 months ago..

I have a Battery Tender which trickle charges, but also a normal 6/12 Battery Charger where you can change the amperage level. You can actually fully charge it in about 2 hours if you can get a hold of just the charger, rather than a trickler.

If you are using a battery "Tender Plus", it has to have i think 2 mil amp in the Batrtery to begin charging. It wont put out any voltage through the leads unless it recognizes some electricty. This is their protective circuit that. That may be why its not charging the battery.

Chris, sometimes when the battery is really drained like it is now, you have to use a higher voltage to overcome this problem and then it will take the charge. For about $30 or less at the AutoZone I think you can buy a 6 amp trickle / Starter charger. It will allow 2 amps and 6 amps then for starting up to 55 amps. What I do is put it on 6 amps and push the bottom switch over to start for a few seconds which gives it about 15 amps (as opposed to the entire 55 amps. Do this a few times and then the needle should show about 6 amps of charging and slowly work it's way down to the green light. This is also a deep Cycle charger which means that you them put it on 2 amps and it will put in a little and let it cool and then put in a little more until it is 100% Charged! I have brought back Junk batteries this way! You will be OK!!

Otis... try an autoparts store... they do it for free.
Make sure they put a load on it... some parts dweebs try to just measure voltage.

Got an 01 and the Bat is (was) gone. I did not take care of it my bad. I tried to revive it with no luck. Got a new one and when I installed it I realized that when I tried to charge it up (just a couple of nights on trickle) that it had boiled over into the bottom of the tray. Not so bad that I couldn't clean it out however THAT SUCKS. No damage but you know.....

I am putting in a 20 Amp Battery and will post the few mods to make it fit. Another Jim Owens modification like his great 19 tooth sprocket he used to go 218+ and Guy had to pay him 250 for doing it!
