Assembling the 12....THE ADVENTURE, chapter 2

TIME TO CHANGE THE NAME...ITS A WHOLE NEW STORY NOW......WOO HOOOOOOOOOOO

Man this sucks, I am not a mechanic by any means, but I just spent the last 2 hours stripping all the plastic of the ZX12 to paint. I talked to Brett tonight, the painter, and am gonna take the plastic down to him saturday so he can get started prepping the pieces. This sucks...I was guessing and cussing takeing it all apart. I am really upset at how this bike looks right now. I have completely neglected it since I got back from the desert and seen how it turned out. the last guy that painted this bike was an idiot....plain and simple. I am finding shit worong with the bike that wasnt there when I turned it over to the shop before I went to the desert. This is the first time I have had the plastic off of it since I got it back. I have both lowers are cracked, and the upper. Keep in mind that this bike has never been crashed, but fell over in the middle of the road when Kelly was doing a U turn on it. the last guy was suppose to take it all apart, fix or replace everything, and repaint it. None of which he did correctly. So here I am starting all over agian...I hate this fukn shit.

I have the utmost faith in Brett, he comes highly recomended, and is a personl friend of a few people here on the board. And all I can say is that if Lucky trusts him to work on his bike, I trust him to work on mine. So I will follow the yellow brick road, and its off to OZ I go.....lmfao

The fun part for me was trying to figure out where all them little plastic suckers went. But it will all be worth it when your sitting back and checking out the new paint.

Change your attitude about it Jim, that's all. I thought it was a blast taking the bike apart to do what I had to do.

You will learn as you go brother, I was freaking out getting into the valves on the 12 but in the end it was no big deal. Take your time and lay all the parts and fasteners out on the bench so they are organized.

Chill...

It'll all be cool Jim, don't worry. The thing you need to realize is that you have a friggin' wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. If you get in a jam all you gotta do is log on here, or give one of your bros a call. We will get you straightened out if need be. That's what friends are for.

i hear ya Rick...was mainly frustrated when i tore it apart, if I could get my hands on that fukr that painted my bike last itme, I would beat him senseless....course he aint got far to go at this point. The bike looks bad, you all seen how bad it look in Spetember, well the paint is peeling right off the plastic at this point in big dollar bill size pieces....and I dont know what happened but one of the lowers is melted, so I have to figure out why, and fix that, befoire the panels go back on it....this aught to be fun...NOT......lol

Muzzy....
I dont think its the pipe though, I really think that the plastic shifted, I dont see the pipe bent, when it fell, it was on the other side....makes no sense....maybe I just need to add some insulation to that area.....

Check out the GM fasteners when you put the plastics back on. The part number is listed on this site somewhere and you will be glad you used em if you have to take the plastics off again.

HDL, the only way to do it right is to do it yourself. If you had taken the plastic off the first time (Just use a real long flat blade screwdriver to push on the plastic tabs that hold the center piece in place and remember to put a small "0" Ring under the dead of the screws that are sort of push in ) You would be better off right now. You will be fine with the new deal, plus you can really clean your bike now!

it did, but like a dumbass I didnt use it Jon....so Now i need to invest in some. I think I am going to have Brett shave part of the body panel where it melted, and then it will never be able to happen again, but I need to adjust the pipe so its farther away from the footpeg.

I am just gonna start with a solid color for now, amd thinking a a dark candy brandywine, or blackcherry. something really dark, but not black. Then put a bit of silver metal flake in it. I will know more tomorrow when I talk to Brett the painter. I am taking the panels down to Nashville to him tomorrow.

Vince thanks for the advice, seem logical to me, I will heed your warning/advice.....lol

zx, I had heard of people using those fasteners, I will pick some up, but I really didnt have any issues with the fasteners that were on the bike...other than there are 5 billion of them.....my 6RR is soooooo much easier to take apart, and the wifes bike I can have stripped in about 5 minutes...it has sharkskinz on it....

Ok back from Nashville, got to meet Brett, adn saw Roger again.

Brett looked over the parts and there are a few I am gonna have to pick up. I need to get a left side lower the one I have is pretty toasted....it broke down by the kicik stand. So the hunt is on. The rest of it he can fix and that process will start. I talked to Roger and we are going to take the 12 down to him here in a few weeks when he gets some time and do some work to the bike, I am hoping to have the forks sent out and the shock as well. The painting process is going to be long, and I am gonna have them paint the engine covers along with the swing arm and wheels. I think I am gonna send a few parts out for some chrome and make it bling a little......she deserves to be spoiled a bit after the way I have treated her over the past year or so....

The paint on the bike right now is soooo bad that Brett stripped most of the one fairing with his hand by peeling the paint off the bike....I know, not good.....But the show is on the road......

Just bought a used right side fairing lower, and am waiting for it to get here...Am still looking for a left side lower for a 02 ZX12R....if anyone runs across one let me know. I got the Goodridge Stainless brake lines for the 12, and the EBC HH+ pads for it....picked up a few other little shiny pieces. Putting a Hans CF ashtray on the list, and a Muzzy steering damper.

HDL....give Plastex a try on the damaged fairing. Some Plastex used with Fibreglass, and the cracked areas will become the strongest areas of the fairing. I have used Plastex to fix all sorts of stuff and recommend it highly.

fixing it isnt an option Maxer, its melted....not broken...so I am going to replace it, then figure out what happened to it that melted it in the first place....I think i bottomed the bike out on the ramp one too many times and bent the header...not sure yet though...

The part # is good i just picked up 11 of em.

By the way i just found my melted spot on my lower cowling also, down to the coating shop, a piece of ceramic cloth and a 400.00 new cowling. I feel the pain.

exactally....I think I bent the header putting the bike in the trailer one time when it bottomed out, fukn thing....the ceramic coating sounds like a good idea, Or I may use the heat blocking material that Muzzy sent with the exhaust. But I will have to get a hold of someone there to have them send me some.

Rock on, I just picked up the last piece of plastic for the bike, waiting for it to get delivered. Then I will take all of the new body panels back down to Brett so he can prep and paint them....then once we get back from DG I will take the bike down to Roger and he and I will knock out the rest of the stuiff being down to the 12..I got the stainless brake lines in yesterday and the EBC pad came the other day. Man I cant wait to see hwo it turns out....
