Tires! - 207 or 208?!?!
OK guys, I finally went to the dealer to check into new tires for my baby. Looks like I'll be at 6,500 on the ORIGINAL 207 rear  . At this point, the tire's threads are all coming out in the center.. the dealer (and a buddy of mine) was like - STOP RIDING NOW! He was ready to give me a tire right on the spot, but I couldn't stay -> my appointment is for Thursday. He has a "leftover" (brand new) 207 for the bike (same as the original). He recommended the 207 over switching to a 208, because the front looks good still, and its a 207 (he prefers keeping the tires matched, although he also said that was kind of nit picky). the total cost tire and balance/changing etc etc is $330 or so (for just the rear). He also said that a 208 is maybe 20 or 30 percent more (DOH) on the tire cost (I think the tire cost was 220 or so). HE will have to order the 208 if I decide to go with it. HEre are my questions:
1. Is the 208 REALLY that much better than a 207? (worth the extra cost)
2. If I go for the 208, should I get a 208 in the front too - I think this will add 130 or so to the cost?
3. I DID see a 208 190/55 in the shop - should I go for THAT?
What do you guys think? I'm so tire illiterate...

nope - 330 US... but the TIRE itself is like 230 or so I think. The 330 is mounting/balancing all that other shit that comes with it.

DAMN! That seems steep!
I usually pay a max of $35 for mounting & balancing when i bring the wheel.

Just got my set 120/70/17 200/50/17 208s 3 days ground from chapp, for 245.00 at the door, why buy 1 tire when u can buy 2 cheaper and they match?

I only paid 139 plus 20 bucks for my diablo mounted and balanced. You need to check other sources. Your getting ripped. Try kneedraggers.com and chapparal.com

DAyum, Even when i buy at the dealer they mount and balance for free, of coarse its built into the 200.00 for the 207

GOT IT - the website is www.chaparral-racing.com. They have a SWEET deal on front AND rear D208ZR tires for 229.97! How are the 208ZR's - is this one of the best tires to get? I'll order first thing tomorrow so I can have em here for Thursday if they are! Thanks guys - SHIT you are saving me TONS Of $$$!!!!

MAN - they ahve the Bridgestone BT 012SS 120/70ZR/17 190/50ZR/17's for 213.97 - how does this combo stack up to the 208's?

DP check out parts411.com you can get tires far cheaper than that....I only pay $325 US for a set of race tires for the track bike, adn that is a set...for the 12 on the street I use Metzler m-i Sportecs, I can get them for less than $200. But I use a 190 rear. can get the 200 for right at $200 a set. And never pay more than 1 hour labor for mounting and balancing a SET of tires. Check with your dealer and see what they charge per hour. its $44 per hour at the local shops here in KY, was $50 per hour in GA.
So ordering a set of M-1's from this place and delivered to you, then mounting and balancing shouldn run you more than $275 for a set...if my math is correct.

and if I were going to pick between 207's and 208's, I would take the 208's. If it were a 207RR then that would be a differnt story....But I agree with your dealer in matching tires...I try to always do that. I usually order 1 front and 2 rear tires when I do.

I see on parts411.com there are "different" part numbers for the 208 ZR front OEM for the R1 and the zx-12? Are they the same tire? Parts411 adds up to 266.84 - a bit more than the chaparral set (229.97) - but is the chaparral the right set? here is the link:

you can buy the 208 that is specifically for the 12. Or just but the ordinary 208. The compounds will be slightly different for the specific 208 for the 12, to try adn give you a bit better wear, but I dont believe it will be that drastically different. My buddy swears byt the ordinary 208 for his 12. If I were going to buy a SET of tires, I would get the Metzlers. I am on my second set and they hold up well. I know that Otis just put a set on his bike, and I know that Ninjaman12R has used them as well...it was rated the best tire in our recent tire poll that we did here.

Deathpulse, ck your front tire for cupping. See if it feals like a cheeze grader. I cup the crap out of my front tires. They are shot in 2000-3000 miles like the rear. I cant keep tires under this thing.
I dont do burnouts but the rear gets flat in the center in 500 miles. Then the handling suffers and the bike wont hold a line nice untill i get new rubber AGAIN. Theres a few hundred mile window where the tires feal 100% and its all down hill from there.
I cant imagine getting 6000 miles from a rear tire on this bike. How the hell do you guys do it?
Go mailorder on tires and save a ton.

Go with the Metzlers or Pirellis! I like the 180s personally.

I like the heigth of the 180 better than the 190, but the 190 feels more planted. Ideally I woudl get a 190/55 and have the best of both worlds...I just cant afford Supercorsas, or BT001's and those are the only tires I have seen that come in the 190/55

Ok guys - I would go for the M-1's in a 190/50 , but part411 charges an arm and a leg for 2 day shipping  . I'm going to have to go wtih the D208's from Chaparral-Racing (a LOT cheaper with quick shipping). I think I'll try the 190/50 in the D208 - anyone else ever try the 208 in a 190?

Ya know what - I did the math and the M-1's are only about 15 bucks more than the 208's . Gents - I'm going M-1 (from parts411.com). Thanks for all the help everyone - if all goes well, I should have the skins on on Thursday. I'm NOT going to raise the rear at all - I hope I don' tneed to with a 190....

I havent raised mine yet DP, but I fully intend to, Ineed to get some weight back up on the front....just goingt o instal a set of adjustable dogbones on it.

207 and 208 are different models of Dunlop tires....different construction, compounds, and tread patterns.....totally different tires....
