Caution about Barnett Clutches!
hey all here are some photo's of the Barnett Clutch that I just pulled out of my bike and I had 50 miles on this and then one race(Memphis), Look at the disformed tabs!! and this was only 1 race, 2 or 3 and these things would have busted all up! also there were small aluminum shavings everywhere!!

I would use caution ever using this clutch, the aluminum base on the fibers will not hold up to the ZX12's HP! this is in My Opinion, and I will never use on of these clutches again!

Yeah...
It is starting to become common knowledge that their clutches are substandard, and can't take high HP. I learned from fellow Gpz turbo owners having problems.
Kawasaki make a good clutch, it just needs the correct modifications in order to work properly.

I've been thinking for YEARS that..."you couldn't GIVE ME" Barnett plates to use in ANYTHING I own...
I've "disliked them" ever since I first tried them in my H2 in 1974???
Tried them in other peoples bikes since then..."at they're request"...STILL hate them...JUNK...IMO...

I'm on my 3rd set of plates but I always stick to the OEM plates.....

Thanks for the info Madmike, I will be upgrading my clutch this winter and I was not aware of this issue with Barnett. I may have learned this the hard expensive way.

WOW. I think you just confirmed my suspicions and probably saved me some potential problems.
See, I used up the last of my current (3rd or 4th) set of clutch plates *right* at the last race of the year. Riding around and shifting, you can feel that the plates are warped.
So, I called around........ensured that I was getting pricing on the 2mm plates,......compared prices, and ended up ordering from MAW - Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse,........BIG HUGE MONDO F$CKIN MISTAKE!!!!
They shipped me those fookin' BARNETT plates, so I called to bitch them out, but was *going* to go ahead and use them. They're sitting on my bench now, waiting for me to heat up the garage and get to work!
Wow. Glad they're not in yet,..I'M SHIPPING THE MUTHERFOOKERS BACK!!!

I had the same trouble with Barnett plates in a Z-1 15 years ago. You'd think that by now they could get it right?

Their clutches have been crappy for as long as I can remember and believe me I have been working on bikes for over 30 years.

Everybody that I know, who deals with bikes, has always told me to NEVER run barnett clutches. I never have, but I've always wondered how they (barnett) have been around so long if they make inferior products??? It's pretty obvious that their stuff IS junk.
Personally I think that Kaw's clutches are hard to beat.

Wow! I had never heard anything bad about Barnett clutches. Was even considering trying out a set of Barnett plates in my 12R. Definitely WILL NOT now!!

M.A.W - Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse has just royally SCREWED ME OVER on these F'n Barnett Clutches!!!!!
They won't take them back!!! Said I was "out of the 30 day return window". FOOK THAT!
They send me parts that are not OEM, and don't even tell me during the ordering process,....they take 30 days to ship the parts to me from 3 different locations, in 3 separate boxes.
I still have everything in boxes, and unwrapped. All paperwork right here. ....and the (supposedly manager of C.S.) lady on the phone tells me that I'm 2 days out of the 30 day policy! Two damn days!! I'm fookin' all kinds of bent out of shape!
It'll take me about two damn days to drive my ass over there and deliver the parts personally! Wonder how they'd feel about that!
I asked who I could write a letter of complaint to, and I was told to write it to the address on the back of the return slip/receipt and address it to "Owner". I'm going to do that, but I have this odd feeling that the letter isn't going to go to anyone of real authority.
I just got off the phone with VISA and I'm disputing the charge too. Maybe that will get their attention.
And to add insult to injury, I think I paid more than I could have gotten them from Muzzy's for. (I'm not sure how in the fuck that happened, I swear I had a cheaper price from MAW and that was why I ordered from them.)
I am SO DAMN MAD, I JUST WANT TO BEAT CRAP!!!

I found that out back in 96 on my SRAD!! A buddy of mine told me that they were better than OEM, so I tried them. Did not like them at first, so I put in an order for some more OEM's. Clutch was GONE before I even got my new OEM's in. F#@% BARNETT!! That reminds me why I always order OEM for the 12...

Anybody who knows anything knows that the ZX12 clutch assembly is a weak piece of crap straight from the factory. Hell, that was the first thing that was said when the bike was first released. How often are you replacing your OEM plates?? You're gonna have problems with that clutch no matter what plates you run in it unless you replace the entire assembly with some sort of aftermarket unit. You can't just blame it on Barnett plates- the plates can't fix the messed up design of the clutch!! The assembly can't handle the horsepower. You guys crack me up- you ever think of taking a minute of your time to go directly to the source? Call 'em up and bitch to their tech guys. I haven't heard any of you mention that you spoke directly with them. Do any of you guys check to make sure that you have the correct clutch stack height in your bike? If it ain't right, your clutch won't work worth a shit. Do you inspect the rest of the clutch parts when you replace the plates? If your pressure plate or hub is worn out, you're going to roast clutches left and right. The reason I am telling you all this is because I have used Barnett products for years and never had a problem. Personally, I don't think a company can be around for so many years if they make crap.

The barnetts may hold up fine in your 1978 Enduro 125. But in a "Real" motorcycle they SUCK I'll admit the the 12 does have some clutch issues but it ain't the plates. I do like the Muzzy steels better though. To summarize this for you, Barnett = shit in my book.

DUDE DO YOU HAVE A FREAKING CLUE!!!! DID YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURES!! Ok the aluminum that the fiber/kevlar is mounted on Sucks, it is aluminum! and it is not Billet Aluminum! and the factory fiber is mounted on a Steel plate? I have never had one of the OEM plates do this! I have had a couple break, But I have never had the ends of them deform at all!! let alone in 50 miles and 10 1/4 mile passes!!!!! Can you imagine what would have happened had I kept them in for 500 miles and 4 races?? Oh my god man It would have sheared the fingers off of the ends!! And I know what the hell im doing with putting clutches in! I have used 10 of them in the last 2 years! and the problem I have is not the clutches wearing down, it is them getting to hot and scorching them! burning the fibers up! I run the Billet basket and the Muzzy Hub! but when you dragrace alot it eats up clutchs! I dont know what kind of bike you have run these in but I dont think they are meant for High HP bike's. and I will not use a set again!! and this is just my opinion, and I dont want anyone of my friends to end up with a bunch of aluminum pieces in their engines from bad parts! Oh and Im sure that if I called barnett, and told them hey I have 50 miles on these and they are wearing out they will laugh at me! you get what you pay for sometimes!

Actually it's a '76 YZ125 that I picked up at a salvage yard back in '82. Runs real good though. I traded Billy Joe Bob at the shop my sister fer it. Yep- you can git good deals down here in 'Bama if ya got plenty 'o girly relatives. I guess us country backwoods folk just ain't got da balls to ride dem big bikes like dem ZX12's. Hey, how bout i trade ya a couple of my cuzzins for a ride on one them big bad thangs? One of them even has her own teeth!
