Deal's Gap report

Gap: very good condition, it was clear and clean of debris. be careful of sporadic police enforcement (wednesday they did afternoon license/registration checks, today there was a sherrif car parked at overlook

Foothills Parkway: the detour is still in effect, and it is well marked. The road is in good shape, no gravel (as of this afternoon) and decent visibility (some trees are grown up around it making it hard to see sometimes)
the foothills itself is good

Cherohala Skyway: clean throughout, though the tennessee side sprts new 30mph signs everywhere. milepost 10 (north carolina side) had 2 wrecks this weekend. it may still be oily. take it SLOW there. (mp 10 is the hairpin with decreasing radius (headed north) just past the picnic area coming down from 5000 feet. (pictured here from above, note the green ZX12r ;P )

TN hwy 116 (west of knoxville, between lake city and

pavement is decent, there are several patches that are being repaired. best bet for first run is to start at west end and head east. (starting in lake city and heading west creates large challenge on several hairpin/switchback corners due to extreme elevation changes, these curves take outside (and therefore wider) route heading east)

NC hwy 28 from deal's gap to 143 cutoff is in great shape. between 143 and 19 it is under construction, though the four-lane part is back to 55mph. HEAVY enforcement here.

28 after 19 (lauada to franklin) is in good condition, very few gravel spots.
28/64 from franklin to highlands is decent, though heavy traffic (even during week) may make it undesirable. from highlands to cashiers it is terrible.

Bridal falls (the palce where youcould park your bike under the waterfall) has half-collapsed. didn't manage to get picture of it, though i'll try tomorow

129 between 72 and 411 is in good shape. saw some enforcement there though.

BRP from cashiers ( US 278) to hwy 19 is great. awesome. a tad chilly, but it's still warming up.

360 has some gravel spots, light enforcement.

72 expect enforcement as season opens up for bikers.

there was a gap fatality a few weeks ago so the police are on semi-high alert (especially with elections coming)

be careful and have a safe trip folks. will post pictures when i get home. (posting this from treetops in robbinsville )

It is with the saddest of hearts that I have to report that I will not be able to make DG VII and will likely miss DG VIII for the same reasons I missed DG V.

After spending close to the last two months trying to figure out how I could make it there, it just doesn't work out. Basically, my obligations to both work and Backmarker Racing LLC (which I am under a legally binding contract) make it impossible to spend more than 2 or 3 days in Townsend.

At work, we are wrapping up on the first part of our busiest time (political season). It doesn't help in the fact that my daughter Ashley (who is my PA) is out all this week on her honeymoon and my production manager won't be here all next week.

As for the race team, the part that I can not get around is that we have an event on the 21-23 (three days instead of the customary two). Between now and that event, we have to put the team's endurance bike back together after the crash at the last event, get the new trailer licensed and repaired (damn those gas station islands and entrances), and prepare three (maybe four) other sprint race bikes.

If I left here to go to Townsend on Sat. the 15th, I'd have to leave no later than the morning of Wed. the 19th to drive back home. When I got back home, I and the team would have prepare and load both the 24' trailer (four R6s, our pit scooter, my rolling toolbox, et.al.) and my 10' Wells Cargo (generator, air compressor, riding gear, spare body work, etc.) as soon as I pulled up. That's because we would be taking out for Hallett, OK on the following morning of the 20th. The total mileage I would be driving (and towing) to make such a venture would easily exceed 1,800 miles (Home/Townsend - 600 miles one way and Home/Hallett - 320 miles one way). After towing that 24' trailer over 750 miles in a day from Elkhart, IN to Little Rock, I'm not that keen on doing a banzai run of over 900 miles with the only stop being to load up two trailers and catch a nap. IMHO, going to DG and hangin' out with ya'll for just a couple of days is more of a tease than going to a titty bar and telling them that your getting married the next day. The 1,800 miles worth of driving/towing would be like later finding out that one of the dancers that rubbed all over you had the crabs... after you gave them to your new bride. Not good.

I wish it were possible to just take a break from the team's activities. I've already missed one event when I went to KMC and rode the 10R. Seeing as how at that time it was the team's first race of the season (no endurance race, just sprints) and considering what the reason for me missing it was, they were fairly understanding. Now that we are in the middle of the season, it's a little harder for them to be so understanding. There are a couple reasons missing this race is not possible. First, no one else on the team has a vehicle that can "safely" tow a 24' long, 7,000 lbs trailer (if I quit hitting those damn gas station islands). Second, I and Jonathan have had a "coming to Jesus" talk with the rest of the team concerning pre race preparations and use of other team members' personal and team properties (i.e. my tools, tie-downs, etc.). For me, as manager, not to be at the next event to enforce these new polices would just be a further set back for my ability to manage the team's activities. The facts that we have added an additional rider under contract (now we are up to 4) for the endurance races and one of the other riders is in the process of getting a used Yamaha TZ250 to race (as well as his Graves Yamaha R6), just makes it that much more difficult.

Seeing as how the team finished fourth in class in the last endurance race and is just 13 points from fourth in the current Medium Superstock class standings, these boys can taste blood. The upcoming 5 hour endurance will be the first time that we have both all of our riders healthy and our newest rider (currently turning the second fastest lap times - Jonathan is the team's fastest rider) all ready to go. If we are going to have a shot at our first podium finish as well as moving up in the standings, it won't get any better that it what it will be on the 21-23 weekend. My duties in keeping all these guys focused on the task at hand is paramount to not only finishing well, but more importantly, not crashing. I have been informed by all the team's members that my attendance is a must since I orchestrated the quick repairs after the crash in the last endurance race. Some of the repairs included repairing damaged bodywork, replacing the windscreen, a clip on and rearset with it's footpeg and shifter/linkage. I, with a LOT of help from the team's other riders and some visiting friends, was able to get the wrecked bike back in from the track, get it repaired, inspected by the officials in Tech and back on the grid before they even restarted the race. Though I have no doubt that they could have done all of it without me, the team feels otherwise.

It might sound like a joke when I say that I am under contract to the team, but I'm sure that Jonathan will confirm that it is anything but a joke. He's under a rider's contract to the team. From the team's articles of incorporation, liabilities and assets and the bank loan in the team's name, to it's individual contracts for it's manager, mechanic, riders and associates, the team's corporate attorney has left no "t" uncrossed or "i" undotted. How can one expect less, seeing as how he's from Chicago. When it comes to being anal about details, this guy makes the way I am about my bike look more like Harry and his bike! Counting the investments in the bikes, trailers, consumables (tires, spare parts, fluids, etc.) and personal items (tools, riding gear, etc.), we've got well over $70,000 sunk into this little venture and the total just keeps climbing every day. This stuff ain't cheap even when we have sponsorship (from my Kawasaki only dealer while we are riding Yamahas), a contract with Dunlop and prearranged discounts with Graves Motorsports, Lockhart Phillips and VP fuels (you don't want to know what a 55 gallon drum of Ultimate 4 or just one race rearset costs). It might not be cheap, but it sure as hell is serious. Even at our lowly CMRA level.

So, even though being with my friends at these DG events are still and will always be one of the most important things in my life, ranking above almost everything else, it just is not to be this time. I will greatly miss spending time riding and smack talking with my closest friends and can only hope that the opportunity to make a future event (DG VIII is pretty well out of the question) presents itself very soon.

Please, all of ya'll ride and drive with your heads screwed on right. I know that Melissa is kinda tired of making trips to the hospital and the wrecker drivers as well as the NC/TN courts make enough money without ya'll contributing to them. Be safe my brothers and sisters and I'll be thinking about ya'll all next week. Probably saying a needed prayer for ya'll or two as well.

Sherm
