That was a blast. I had to make three judgement calls when the road we were on came to an unexpected end. Got lucky all three times. And yep, the road I was HOPING was paved all the way through, wasn't. But was a great ride up to it.

Just some notes about the recent ride. I'm including a STC rating. That's Surface/Traffic/Cops with 1 being worst surface, worst traffic, most cops
1. START - Southworth ferry terminal - 3/2/5
Met up with Nuihi as he came off the ferry. Talked a bit, then hit the road! Nice starting out the ride with someone who's got it all together and is ready to just ride.
2. WEST - Hwy 160 - Cross 16 - Continue to Lake Flora Road - 5/2/4
Slugged along. Fewking Sedgewick Road (Hwy 160) needs an enema...
3. Right - West on Lake Flora to Hwy 3 - 6/7/8
Lake Flora Road is always fun. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE goes fast on that road. The pickup truck in front of us was doing 70 when we passed him.
4. Left - South on Hwy 3 to Shelton Dairy Queen - 6/5/5
So damned nice riding down 3 to Shelton that you could puke. Was a good idea getting going early, we seemed to miss the heavy traffic. I always tiptoe through Shelton, it's pretty famous for butthole cops.
5. WEST - West Railroad Road to US101 - 4/5/5
This is 'dark territory' for me. Never been exploring out this way, usually just zip up and down 3 to get to / from Olympia. Not a bad road, local traffic not too bad...
6. Right - North on US101 to Hwy 102 - 6/5/4
Ah yes, 101...Well, it's there. Nothing to see here, move along...Actually, traffic did move along quite nicely. Was keeping a sharp eye out for 102, so wasn't going to blast along at hyperdrive. Actually, was easy to find, with all the signs to the State Patrol Academy and the State Prison...Oops, what's this? Hwy 102 ends? And we've come to a 'T' intersection? Which way do we go now??
7. Left - West on Hwy 102 to Matlock, WA - 5/6/5
Umm...Taking a brief look at my map, we decided to take a right on W. Shelton Matlock Road. I was reassured of my first WAG (Wild Ass Guess) when I saw the signs (and we later rode by) Nahwatzel Lake. Ok, Ok...It wasn't too much of a guess. After all, we *did* come from Shelton, and were going *to* Matlock...
8. Left - South on W Matlock - Brady Road to W Schafer Park Road - 5/6/6
Long straight stretches. Bumpy road tho...Maybe it's because I'm riding a 10R? I'm sure my ZZR woulda been more comfortable. Less fun tho, and that's what this trip is all about. Very little traffic, no cops to speak of. Went as fast as I wanted to and only passed a couple cars.
Man, it was a distance from the last turn to this one! I was getting concerned that we actually missed it! Not that there were any turns along the way. It's hard to get a grasp of just how big the Oly Peninsula is when you are blasting along on 101. These backroads do more than just highlight the natural beauty, they let you really absorb the sense of 'bigness'.
9. Left - East on W Schafer Park Road to Schafer Park - 7/7/7
Hmm... Not a bad little road, some nice curves, clean surface. About as many people out here as pineapple trees. By the time we got to Schafer State Park, wasn't in a mood to stop. Continued on to the next turn.
10. East - Continue W Schafer Park Road to Cloquallum Road - 5/7/7
Road surface got a little bit bumpy, and saw some soft shoulder action going on. Nothing too bad, just something to keep in mind. Were met by a pair of friendly dogs that came over and said hi while we were plotting out the next turn.
11. Right - South on Cloquallum Road to Dairy Freeze, Elma, WA - 5/7/7
If that was Elma...We missed it! Stopped for a moment to recon, and din't see anything of interest, moved along on Mont Elma road, heading towards Montesano. Stopped at Montesano and grabbed lunch. While we were eating, saw a bunch of RUB Harley riders come in. Montesano seems to be doing well, must be the influence of being close to Satsop and the attendant income from it.
12. West - Hwy 12 to Wynoochee Road W NFD22 (through Montesano, WA) to Grisdale, WA - 8/8/8
And yes, at mile marker 17, the road does turn to gravel. Damn! But I gotta tell you, this is a GREAT road. Perfect surface, it undulates along the Wynoochee Valley. Climbing and diving, tossing the bike right and left, we encountered no traffic or cops. I think it was close to 11:00am by then, so peeps were out and about. The ride back to Wynoochee Wishkah Road was a great way to resample that nice roller coaster ride in reverse.
WARNING - Check road condition, if bad return and Wynoochee - Wishkah Road - Follow Alt Plan
Here's the rub: Although it isn't called out on the map, and there are no warning signs. this road turns to gravel...Right after you come around a corner. Eeep! I hit the gravel doing about 50...Let the bike coast down, got it stopped and turned around. Damn! Shot in the ass! Again! Grrr... At this point, we had to kind of just punt and head on12 towards Aberdeen. It was still early in the afternoon, and man, that sun felt great! I was getting a little warm, so opened up the vents on my Razor jacket and pants. Big mistake! They caught way too much wind, and I wore myself out on the ride back east from Aberdeen to the Sound. We basically took 12 east to 8 east to 108 east to 101 north to 3 north...
Stopped in Port Orchard at the Ale House and quaffed some fluids, looked at the time, decided to get dinner before catching the Bremerton ferry. Waitress from downstairs was a cutey!
13. Continue NFD22 - turns into Donkey Creek Road - to US 101
14. Left - South on US 101 to Humptulips, WA
15. Continue south US 101 to Youman's Road
16. Left - East on Youman's Road - Changes to E. Hoquiam Road - to Hwy 12, Aberdeen, WA
17. Left - East on Hwy 12 to Mox Chehallis Road
18. North - Mox Chehallis Road to Hwy 8
19. Right - East on Hwy 8 to US101
20. Left - North on US101 to Hungry Bear Steakhouse, Shelton, WA
ALT ROUTE
A1. West - Wynoochee Wishkah Road to Wishkah Road
A2. Right - West on Wishkah Road to US 101
A3. Right - North on US 101 to Kirkpatrick Road
A4. Left - West / Southwest on Kirkpatrick Road to Copalis Crossing
A5. Right - Copalis Breach Road to Copalis Beach
A6. Left - South on Hwy 109 through Ocean City to Sampson, WA

I'll throw my 2 bits in also. Like swft said, great to be able to head straight out for the ride, right after getting off the ferry. Now here's what ol' swft left out, MAN IT WAS F*$%^N cold. Being the bonehead I am, I decided to wear the nylon mesh armor. Good thinking spaz. By the water on the penninsula and it's early and cold, DDDUUUHHHH! Lets just say I felt like a friggin popsicle for the first several hours, fortunately swft recognized this and stopped a few times so I could stop and warm up for a couple minutes. Eventually warmed up and things were good, real good. As for the Wynoochee Valley road, what can I say. The thing if a bit longer would be one I would ride down to, just to ride it. Great mix of sweepers and quick turns, very little straight aways and a pretty decent surface, save the occasional rock slide area . As for cops, I think we did quite well, I only saw one and he pulled in a bit behind us and just as quickly disappeared. Oh and yes the bartender at the end was a cutey. Good ride good food and a new friend to go riding with, what can I say, life is good .
