New Radar Detector Test
Check out the latest Car and Driver issue for a comprehensive test of radar detectors. First place? Valentine One, and it wasn't even close.

Finally!
I was so relieved when I saw that review. I am used to buying something based on rave reviews from other people and finding out later that it's a piece of crap. I was amazed by how far away this thing pick up the man! The Radar Screamer is a must buy. The M-Stand I got seemed like a good idea, and it does put the detector right up there in view but it blocks my time/gas/temp gauges. I'm terrible for waiting 'till the last minute for gas, looking down and OMG - the last bar is flashing! Prob gonna run outta gas a lot now.

Very Interesting
A lot of people have been quoting from this highly controversial radar test which rates Valentine lowest: http://www.radartest.com/DS4HEM.html. If you compare that test to the one in the Feb 2002 Car and Driver, you'll notice the categories and weightings in the rating matrix ARE EXACTLY THE SAME IN BOTH TESTS. It is only the scores assigned that vary. I smell a rat. Time for some in-depth sleuthing on who scoring these things straight and whose trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

that test is BS
That person who wrote the article is very uneducated on how a V-1 works
examples:
the Valentine shrieked a strident warning of three simultaneous microwave threats. Yet the hamlet has no police radar at all, largely because it has no police department.
The V-1 is very sensitive which gives it long range but due to its sensitivity it can pick up alarm systems which is more than likely the case in the above statement. I ignore most X band warnings and all my K and Ka hits 95% of the time & I end up passing a cop. The other 5% is probly a cop on a side road near by.
Truth is, radar to the side poses no threat at all and radar from behind is scarcely worthy of more attention.
hummm I like to know at night if a cop is sneaking up behind me.
We'd prefer to not to be annoyed by incessant warnings of microwave ovens in roadside eateries and door openers at every Safeway store.
all X band can be programed down via the built in computer
Just let us know when there's a real threat up ahead and keep quiet the rest of the time. It does that too.
user-programmable features (the BEL has seven, the Passport nine), text display, voice alerts, selectable band defeat and tutorial mode.
I don't need all that crap on a radar dect. do you???
I could list more but I think you get the point
The article is clearly one sided and caters to the radar dects he sells. hope this info helps you in a decision either way.

I found something about the old test on the Valnetine website. He talked about how the test setup made many of the detectors look identical. Basically, he said the radar was X feet from a curve, and so when the car went around the curve, all of the detectors got the signal. So they all said X feet.
Something to look at...

It is amazing how biased some of these tests are. One will say a certain one is a pile and another one will say it is the neatest thing since tits on a woman. Some of it must be the place they test it or maybe it is the radar guns they test it against. I just bought a Uniden GPSRD and one outfit took it on a 4000 mile test and said it worked very well and gave good warning for all types of radar, another outfit in New Zealand said it was a pile. Different radar guns?? So far the thing is really working well. I have it mounted in my new truck and the thing was picking up Ka band strongly from about a mile and the other bands so far away you thing it must be a false alarm but eventually the cop comes by. The GPS part of it is so cool.
