How the F@#k do you get in here?? Pics
Took all the body work and stuff off last night to begin with some maintenence. I am going to be taking the front forks off and rear shock off and send them out for refurbishing, replace the spark plugs, add a PC and put on new tires and brake pads and now that everything is off, probably add steel braided brake lines. My question is replacing the spark plugs and while I'm at it, ripping out the clean air mod. Rick has e-mailed me pics of his motor with the clean air off but I have to say fellas, how the hell do you get hands in there to do ANYTHING. Check it out.
In this pic, do I need to remove, just try to push away all this crap blocking the way into the top of the motor?

Now there seems to be more room on this side of the motor, I can just move the throttle cables

And to get the rear shock off, how the hell do you get a wrench or socket in here to get the upper nut and bolt off this thing?

Or do I remove this nut from under the gas tank and pull the shock down?

He is the partially stripped bike after last night.

And holy crap! Look at the crap on the underside of my front calipers, that's not going to be fun trying to remove that. Any suggestions on a product to use?

ONe other question. Those of you that have taken your rear shock off before, how did you support the rear of the bike to get it off??

hang it from the rafters in your ceiling of your garage by the subframe Chris.... Or run a steel rod through the swing arm pivot and support in on 2 jack stands....
Getting that rear shock off might be easier if you take the inner fender off the bike....just a thought.....

Yeah, I was thinking about hanging it, thought there might be an easier way though. You know Jim, inthe manual, it says just remove the upper nut and then lift up on the rear of the bike and pull out the bolt. It doesn't say what happens after that though, as in, the bike will crash to the ground.

when I took mine off I supported the bike on a car jack. try simple green and a toothbrush on the brakes to clean them off.

I agree with REDX...Simple Green or Power Clean (the purple stuff) will take that shit right off. I imagine any engine degreeser will take that off...just my .02

The easiest way to support the bike to pull off the rear shock is to put a small jack under the oil pan. The bike will be slightly unbalanced, so just tiewrap the swingarm spools to the rear stand, and you'll be ok.
The is the absolute easiest way because if you use one of those screw-type jacks, you can jack it up a gnats ass at a time and easily get it to the point where there is no force on the shock bolts at all.
As for taking the top bolt off the shock...any way you can get up there....

As for the plugs.
disconnect all the wires from the left side (first pic)...and you will have pretty good access to all that crap.
Remove that ridiculous black plastic plate on top of the valve cover....should make for even more room. And get rid of the kleen air system if you havent already.
Once thats done..the little bendy tool kawasaki gave us in the toolkit makes short work of the plugs.

Thanks for all the advice fellas, I'll be tackling the plugs and fork and shocks this weekend. Still don't know how the hell I'm going to get that upper but loose on the rear shock though. There is no room for a wrench, I may have to take the upper rear fender off, which I really didn't want to.

Simplify Jr.
Use a long extention and go through the hole on each side of the bike. (Where the 2 subframe spars are) That's how I'm gonna remove mine.

I use Knight's Grez-Off to clean the crud off my bike, and the truck's engine. Works great.

Put it on your rear stand first then put a car jack under the shock , lift it up, put jack stands on both sides with a pipe going through the bike just under and in front of the rear passenger peg brackets with the stands under the pipe, lower it and she'll rest there good and solid.

keep in mind that your shock is not centered on the bike man, she don't jack up perfectly straight!

you guys are all Nuts!!! I have done this so many times. dont even screw with those bolts! unbolt the main top bolt.
Now to support the bike put a jackstand under the frame on the right side of the bike and then on the left side put it under the rear set. use straps to the rafters but only for an emergency fall off. once the bike is up off of the ground. remove the top lowering links bolt. and then the bottom bolt that goes through the shock and linkage. you shock will slide down and out easily.

Just did the same myself when my shock went to get new oils, seals and gas. I didn't have any trouble to get to the bolt holding the top of the shock - the inner fender was a little on the way but only very little and it gave up just enough. But I'd imagine as You have the top bolt allready at hands - just loosen it and You can have access to the top of the shock. And one note to getting to the plugs. I've removed that thing that hold the upper wires in the frame so I can just put them away. So I have to only disconnect the cam sensor, and the 2 wires for the cooler(sensor and power). And also that gray connector to that sensor I can't recall now. Then remember to unplug the wires to the plughats before removing them. I also usually remove that ram-air ducts and the trotthle cabals and choke cable. Put if You're only changing plug probably all of that dosen't have to be taken out. Next my work includes changing the gear change dogs and then the front forks and seals. It's now time to first seals and the bike has 75000 km! Not bad. Nice to see how the shock is know after rebuild? And when I'm trough - the summer is here and I can (finally) start riding...

OK, I got the plugs out. Actually, once I got all the wires and crap cleared away and the throttle cables moved, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, still tight under there for sure, but patience prevailed. I am leaving off the plastic tray and rubber mat. I pulled the plugs and they are bad, here is a picture or one, not a nice tan color like they should be, but what do I expect not changin them in 25K miles and running rich for half that.

I'm all set on how I'm going to get the rear shock off. I'll be working on that Saturday. Kinda in hold mode now waiting for the front pit bull adapter to arrive, hoping it shows up today.
I also just got an e-mail from Wilson about him doing my valve adjustment, I' going to see if maybe he come to the house cause I already have the top of the motor clear.
Fish, brother, I'm all set, thanks for the offer though.

I'll tell you Rick, putting more lights in my garage sure helped. I have 12 4 foot banks of lights in there now and it's bright as shit. Kinda like having the sun in the garage. Makes working on projects like much much easier. A neightbor stopped by at about 8 last night and laughed saying he thought a surgery might be going on in there it's so bright. I looked around at my bike in pieces and parts all layed out nice and in order on my workbench and said, yeah surgery IS going on.
