Anybody here own a KX 500?????
Are they as MEAN as what I've been told???? I hear they are very good at throwing people off their backs. I don't know anybody that has one, but a buddy of mine who used to ride KTMs said that the KX 500 kicks ass.

Yep!!!!
I had one for a while, they are the shit. I weigh 155 and the thing never knew that I was on it. Very awsome!!! I'll stick with the 250 for the track. KX500 will spit you off in a heartbeat when you accidentally hit the throttle on the whoops or another bump your but will launch like the spaceshuttle!!:P YOu hardly ever give it throttle on the track, just a blip....blip..blip here and there.
If you have a wide open space to ride one they can not be beat but way too much for the track or enduro.
I almost got a new one a few months ago, the 2001 KX 500 was about $600.00 CHEAPER than the 2001 KX 250!!!
I had a KX125 KX250 and KX500 all at the same time, the best all around KX is the 250 IMHO.
A friend of mine is a little more sane than I and he had his for 10 years, he said he never had a reason to take it passed third gear.
Try one before you buy, they are awsome!!!! but I say the 250 is your best bet.

I agree with speedcraver, 500 is bad-ass. I had one and I sold it for a 250. Way more user friendly! Could never use all the power the 500 had. Lots of tourque! Good to show off on though.

I got a cr 500. Buy one of those. At least it doesn't look like it came from the 80,s. They haven't changed the KX 500 style since 88'. I have ridden both and love the cr compared to the kx.

Go for it!!
Hey Ninjaman,
If you aren't going to race it on a track, the 500 should be just fine. You don't have to run it in the upper rpm range to go fast. Just short shift to the next gear and use the torque. If you need more power, its always on hand.
I know how big you are and you like to pull wheelies. You will love a 500 for that. I pulled many high gear wheelies with my open class bikes. 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear wheelies are the safest. Trying it in 1st or 2nd, you could loop.
If the KX is like my CR-500 was, you might want to Moose the flywheel for woods riding. Little flywheel effect will stall in the tight stuff unless you keep the revs up and slip the clutch.
The 125 and the 250 are better and faster around a track. But those classes are loaded with lots of fast riders. Not that many people want to ride the big bores. Not very many people can run them wide open. So even if you were going to race, that might be the best class for you.
For sand or hill climbing the 500 will be the best for you.

Thanx Fellas
Yeah I figured the things my bud told me about the 500 were probably right. I'm only kicking the idea around right now, but who knows. I like the fact that the 500 has gobs of power, and DJ you are correct about the wheelies. I bet that thing would be great for that. If I was a smaller guy I'd definitely go for the 250 when I got ready to buy, but I ain't.

If you are a bigger guy , go for the 500. Who cares if it looks like it came from the 80's If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is a 300 pounder running around here on one and he loves it. Nice bikes!
