Dyno run

I just put my '02 ZX12R (pretty much stock except a yosh RS-3 slip on can and a 190 rear instead of 200)on a dyno to get HP and torque, more importantly to get a measured top speed run.

160.37 max horse
87.26 max torque
175 mph top speed at the rev limiter

What gives?

Would more HP make any difference on top speed? The enging would still turn only so fast and when you put it to stock gearing you will get the same result, right? I would think the only way to get more speed would be to sacrifice low end for high end with a smaller rear sprocket.

What do you recommend for street use "high-flow" filters? And would that require a Power Commander?

Thank you for the comments...

As far as top speed goes, what gearing is on the bike? If you added teeth to the rear sprocket or put a smaller front sprocket on that will reduce the top speed. Also is the overall diameter of the replacement tire you put on the back the same as factory Dunlop? If it's smaller that will lower the top speed.

Your horsepower number is a little low but not completely out of the spectrum. Will horsepower increase top speed? Of course, yes as long as you're not maxed out on gearing, in the real world. On the dyno however if you bounced the limiter in 6th gear, then you're finished. 100 more horsepower wouldn't help that situation.

No aftermarket filters do not require a powercommander. Sounds like your bike needs tuning tho with those numbers. What were your air-fuel ratios? Was this dyno run done on a DJ250?

I think you nailed it with the observation on the back tire.

isn't 02 "limited" to 185mph; add that to a slightly smaller circumference rear tire and voila; 175mph.

A stock tire at 76.5" circumference, 18/46, 2002 "limited" to 185 bike, would have been hitting about 10700rpm.

A 73" circumference tire = 175mph

whats the circumference of yr 190 tire

maybe i miscalculated???

My 01 ran 175.6 RWHP on a DJ 250 last summer( 34C / 94% Humd) with a Muzzy pipe and PC3R with mapping work.

I'm planning on some more tweaking to get it a little higher, but I'm content right now.

I am currently running a D208GP 190/50ZR17 vs. the stock D208J 200/50ZR17. I am not sure how much smaller it is than the stock but I can check the circumference.

The test was run up to 11500rpms (red line) where the speed and rpms dropped off.

My air/fuel ration is roughly as follows-

up to 6000-about 14.5 (less the punching spike)
6000 to 9500-from 12.5 to 13
9500 to 10500-13.25
above 10500 it tapers down to 12.25

The dyno ram air is only good to 160mph. That may play a part as well.

Hop numbers arent too bad...but the torque is down a bit.....cant say enough about having a good map to make everything work right

Dyno's vary. At least you have a baseline run now for comparison. My bike dynoed 153 horsepower stock on our dyno here but seemed to run as anyones bike....

I don't know.

It was indicating 190 on the speedo, does anyone else think this is possible? The gearing is close together is it that close?

Very possible that was 6th gear.

It dont take much in way of gearing to knock of MPH. I am one tooth down on the front, and went to a 190 on the rear....in 6th gear the limiter kicks in at 175.6 mph, according to the dyno. So I am 10MPH off of what they say the top speed should be.

Its been said before, all dynos are different. My bike dynoed 154 hp on one dyno and a week later dynoed 147...stock....i dont know what kind of dyno s they were.... When Kevin got down with it at SMW...it put out 180.1 on they dyno there....HP numbers and torque numbers are cool to compare, but the reall important thing for most of us is 1. Does it run right? and 2. Is it enough HP/Torque for you? I dont drag race, so all the HP I have I can VERY seldomw use.....only thing its really good for is laying darkies and chewing tires up......oh, and Ricks favorite...triple digit wheelies....hehehehhe
