ill fitting K&N's
I bought my bike in december of 2002...I have 1 riding season on the bike and about 5,600 miles on it. I upgraded to the Muzzy Clutch yesterday and I thought since the bike is apart. i'll clean the filters. I always read that the K&N's were ill fitting filters so before I yanked them out, I took that plate off that covers the velocity stacks and there was a gap on the filters on the sides about 3/8 of in inch. those damn things weren't even in there right. I pulled them out anf they were all fooked up on the sides like they had be smashed against something..i can't believe I ran all year like that...Hell i might get some performance gains now that the filters are in there correctly. anyone else have this problem.?

I had the same problem. They are a bear to remove and when I put them back in,I had to manually push the sides back in place.Real poor quality.

Well, I just put a set of BMC's in. When I bought the bike a couple of months ago, it came with a full Micron Serpent exhaust (big money as we all know)and a PCIII.
Now it seemed to me that if the previous owner went to that expense to add these performance upgrades, I should be expecting to be pulling some K&N filters, and adding my BMCs, but instead I find completely unaltered Stock filters.
This makes no sense to me, does anyone here see the value in not going with at least K&Ns, which would have been the least expensive of all his upgrades by a long shot, and made the other upgrades produce way more power.
Well at least now I know my Baby has a new set of BMCs to complimemt the other mods, I will keep the stocks and mod them like JonnyCheese said, maybe do a ButtDyno test latter this summer.
As a side note, the fit and finish of the BMCs was far superior to any K&Ns I have ever put in any vehicle I have owned.

BMC"S look nice - I seem to tear up the K+N's every time I r+r for servicing.
I did however call them up and asked about the "1 million mile warranty" - they shipped me a new one in 2 days with basically no questions asked.

Early K&N's suck dick! They don't fit worth a shit. BMC is the way to go.

It was kinda funny, a few days ago, I went to put the BMC filters I had just picked up from STARCycle, which had them on closeout,( great price by the way).
I bought my bike a couple months ago, and it came with a full Micron Serpent exhaust and a PCIII, so obviously the previous owner dropped some decent cash to add power.
So given that, I was expecting to be pulling out K&N filters or at the very least modded Stock filters, but instead I found completely unaltered stock filters. Does this make any sense to anyone.
To spend $1200 or so on an exhaust, maybe $300 on the PCIII, but the guy couldn't drop 70 bucks on decent filters which means He was prolly not getting nearly the HP gains he was expecting from the other items.
Anyway, problem fixed now, with a race set of BMCs sitting nice and snug in there now.
