European Export "GATSO" comes to DC

Of all the Problems in DC, Now they are the First in the Nation to have a "Gatso" Speed Camera. Now the Residents of DC can have something in common with its European Brothers, 24 / 7 Speed cameras! The good news is, every station where a camera is of any kind is published so you drive by to make sure and keep a mental picture when you speed along. I know this intersection and actually it is not a bad idea to have one there since the main university for the Deaf in the US in right there and speeds of over 100 MPH have already been recorded. The SPeed Limit is 25 MPH in the District unless otherwise posted!

Thanks to the Brits that invented Radar and now Gatso, our driving in the US is headed for the worse!

Vince, what is the difference between "Gatso" and the photo radar that has been in use here for years?
I believe it currently is not in use in Eastern Washington but was a couple of years ago.
Iot was a fully automated radar and camera setup and if I remember correctly it was a "contractor" service that was ran by a non law enforcement company and was determined by the court to be an illegal venue. The contractors payment was a percentage of the fines levied!

It provided a real lesson in not loaning your car, as the registered owner received the ticket and was liable for it if the actual driver was not identified. The owner of the car got the points, the fines and the raised insurance rates.

Also not speeding while driving your girl friend around when the wife is at home was a lesson learned!
They issued the tickets with a full view of the windshield, and more than one ticket showed the girl friend setting next to the driver.
They started to black out all but the drivers face in later tickets.

Is there any difference between Gatso and the photo radar that is being used to catch red light runners.
We have had that type in use here for 2 years now.

Washington, the state.

I hear ya Vince...Very soon the NY State Thruway will have the speed camers...

I wish the Governor would have the speed cameras installed for the safety of the drivers, but thats not the case...The bottom line is the income generated from the fines imposed and the incentives offered by all the insurance companies to the state of New York!!!

It is getting too damn expensive to live here in NYC now...They keep raising taxes, gasoline, there are surcharges on all utility bills, cell phone, new tires for your vehicles, raising the tolls on the bridges and tunnels...Businesses are moving out and going bankrupt...In order to buy a house within the five boroughs of NYC you need to make at least $85,000.00 a year...

Florida is looking better and better...Its time to seriously investigate central Florida for Housing, Jobs and DragStrips!!!...Anyone have any input about Florida I welcome them!!!

Great stuff Jeroen, Always good to hear from you! Someone asked the difference between the Photo Radar and this? The difference is the Gatso uses GPS so you will not get any warning until someone makes a Detector for GPS

Marcos, i'll be in the DR tomorrow. Punta canna, Secrets Excelents resort.
If your nearby let me know we'll hookup for a beer.

Vincent, how will gps record the speed of a vehicle if it doesnt have a gps unit on board to send the data of the moving vehicle?

I dont know about where everyone else lives but they need camaras at red lights around here instad of for speeders. Here in CT every time a light turns red people just keep on going. And i dont mean amber lights, i mean 2-3 cars thru the RED. Its getting bad around here.

Gatso Cameras
Invented by: Maus Gatsonides
A Dutchman. It is also a Dutchman (an Accountant, I might add) that has come up with a diabolical scheme to tax the Internet usage within the European Union (Bit Tax). It takes an accountant to screw things up. If it works, let an accountant loose on it. That will fix it! I often wonder why it is, that people who can't do real jobs end up as Social Workers, Politicians, Accountants, etc. But that's another story...

What do they do? (Gatso Cameras, that is)
They are designed to photograph speeding motorists, thus freeing up valuable police resources to drink tea, etc.

How do they work?
They measure motorists speed and if they are exceeding the speed limit, they are photographed (currently from behind) giving the authorities your vehicle registration mark.

How do they do that?
Firstly, they have to measure your speed. This bit can be done in two ways. One way, by using piezo-electric strips embedded in the road; two such strips at a known distance apart will detect your wheels over them. The time it takes between the two strips gives the speed. (Speed equals distance divided by time.) Another way is to use radar. By emitting suitably high-frequency radio waves, they can bounce these from the vehicle, and the rate-of-change of distance is detected by a frequency shift from the reflection. If this rate-of-change is higher than the rate-of-change for the speed limit, you're caught.

Next, they have to photograph the vehicle. This bit sounds easy but is not so straight-forward. The photographs taken will be both normal and infra-red. (The infra-red will 'see' your registration mark when the vehicle is caked in dirt.) Also, to collect the proof, two photographs are taken in quick succession, so that the distance travelled can be seen. Obviously the "quick succession" is a known time: Again speed can be calculated. To determine the distance, white square marks are usually painted in the gutter of the road and again on the crown of the road. These are a known distance and the two photographs will show the distance travelled.

How do we overcome this?
Again, in order. If there are piezo-electric strips, there is nothing practicable that can be done. Radar on the other hand is quite easy to fix.

For the boffs amongst you, current technology uses X Band radar (which is really microwaves). The frequency is about 10 Gigahertz, which (take it from me) yields about a 30 hertz frequency shift for every one-mile-per-hour travelled. If you are travelling towards the source, the frequency is added (and goes up) and goes down if you are moving away by the same amount. 30mph gives a bit over 900 hertz shift. If another (similar) radar source were to mix its frequencies with the reflected ones from the camera, you would confuse the living daylights out of it. It might record your speed as something very erratic and probably impossible!

The photography bit would be interesting, too. For the infra-red part - simply drill some small holes in the vehicle registration plate to take infra-red emitting diodes. A number of them permanently emitting infra-red would fog an infra-red film. Secondly, the normal photography: This requires that when the 'flash' from the camera gets you, something flashes back. Preferably two flash sources either side of the vehicle registration plate (to fog the film again). However, the cameras might not flash in daylight.

Then again, they also use video camaras. Have you noticed the rather large circular or square white painted blobs in the road? They are 1/10th mile apart (or 2/10ths on motorways).

Follow the link for more information on Gatso cameras or here for speed trap information.

More to come ....
When it does, you will need

Thanks, Ozzy, I plan to drive by and see if my Radar pick them up and look at the street to see if any cutting has been done. Neat to learn here. "The license we save just may be our own"
