Question about battery connections I have a 00 ZX12, and there are times when I don't ride it for several weeks/months. I hate having to undo all those two dozen fasteners to unhook the battery cables. I tried leaving the top screw out of the battery cover, but I still can't get to the negative terminal post.
My question, is if I just unplug the two plastic connectors and the side grounding wire, WITHOUT unplugging the negative terminal battery cable, will that prevent the battery from getting drained by the bike's electronics? Thanks for any input!

Thanks swft! It's nice to know that I don't have to disconnect the main negative terminal when the bike sits for long periods...
necro,
I have a Battery Tender, but since I store my bikes in a locked storage unit (which has no power outlets), disconnecting the batteries is the only practical way to preserve battery power. When I won't be riding the bikes for several months, I will take the batteries out, bring them indoors, and hook 'em up to the Battery Tender...I just wish it wasn't such a pain to remove the 12's battery...

Now remember, even if you un-hook the battery, after just sitting for a few months it starts to sulfate/deteriate. This may sound crazy. but since you have a stock motor you can buy the 9 amp version and it is alot shorter by almost 2". maybe that would help you get it in and out easier and it will start ok on a stock motor. shoot I used one as my emergency battery at the track. and never had a problem starting my 1361, the few times, I needed it.

Farm n fleet has battery tender for 20 bucks and it has a special adapter
that you leave on the bike so you don't have to take anything apart except for the first time.

But a Battery Tender does him no good without a power hookup, like he described.

The 9 amp sounds like a good idea...do you think a 9 amp battery will be compatible with the zx12's charging system? I'm worried about frying something...

THen again, if you are putting the bike in storage, just take the battery with you and keep it on a float charger at home...

it is still putting out the voltage needed, only thing that would or could happen would it might wear out faster. but I know someone who used one for 2 years? because a local chop shop just bought it to fit and did not care about it. Well he was to cheap to go and buy a full sized battery? well long story short he never had any electrical problems. only thing he did not ride a bunch where if you did ride all of the time on long rides, it might slightly over charge it. but I think you should be ok.
The battery that you would want is the part # YTX12A-BS , and this battery is 4 3/16" tall compaired to the stock of 5 3/4" tall so you are getting a good 1 1/2" extra room if that will work for you also here is the run down so you are not loosing out on much except height.
Smaller YTX12A-BS Stock YTX14-BS
capacity 9.5AH 12AH
Weight 6.3lbs no acid 8.1lbs no acid
Terminals open bottom tapered bottom should be ok.
acid vol. .5 liters .7 liters
charge A 1.0 amps (reg current) 1.4 amps (reg current)
CCA@0F 175 200
So if you want a shorter/ lighter battery this should work in your application. and you are really not giving up very much CCA to do this.
