WA State Motorcycle Drivers License

Ok, this is no joke so please read this and get it done ASAP. I just went down to the Dept. of Licensing and here is the deal....

If your WA Driver's License has the number 3 endorsement for "All Motorcycles" then you can goto the DOL to have your endorsement upgraded to a 7 for free of charge, as long as you get in there to do it BEFORE the last day of June 2004. They wont even charge you the normal $10 standard reissuing fee, it is COMPLETELY free. I just got back and did it.

Here is the deal...by having an endorsement of 7, you are covered for not only all motorcycles, but also all 3-wheel motorcycles and side cars as well. After July 1, 2004, people will have to take an additional test and pay an additional testing fee to have their endorsement of 3 upgraded. WA State ruled that we can grandfather clause in to the new endorsement without having to pay anything extra or do anything more for our license, but it has to be done then by the end of June.

Just passing the news along.

Yeah, I hadnt heard that before either till a friend mentioned it to me when he got back from the DOL in Spokane, WA. So I went down to my local DOL here in Pullman, WA and sure enough it was all true. I got a new license with the new endorsement of 7 and they didnt charge me anything at all.

She was saying that there are some motorcycles out there with 3 wheels, as well as custom made ones. This also covers you when a sidecar is attached to the motorcycle. I have seen one sidecar in my life actually on the road. She said there are only about 200 sidecars registered in WA state....she asked if I had one, of course I said no, she said it would be nice to have the endorsement in case you ever rode or owned/operated a sidecar or 3-wheel.

Hmmm....
They probably don't want to tell anyone about it - because after July 1 they can start charging people to take additional tests!

Actually, it is about the money. The MSF courses are funded from the license fees. Since there's no fee for sidecars/trikes (right now) there's no funding for training. In the future, those funds collected for sidecar / trike licenses will go towards classes for that license.

So is anyone from Washington State here going to go get their license upgraded under the grandfather clause?
