Tremec TKO 5 speed...
Does anyone on here have any expierience using this tranny?
I'm contemplating using it in the chevelle project sence the original muncie is not even close to capable of handling a zz-502s 550+ ft lbs of torque and 500+ hp.
I'd rather have the numbers matching muncie on the shelf than in the scrap yard.
The other options are a Jerico 4 speed, or a T56 (would require major tunnel mods) or Richmond T-10 or richmond 5 speed.
The richmond 4 and 5 speeds are weak for this application.
I'm pretty sure my wife would grenade both of them.
The jerico is wicked expensive and had straight cut gears(very noisey) and down shifts almost like a friggin tripple countershaft Mack(dump truck)tranny.
So it looks like a tremec is on top.
I'm searching for a board like this one on the topic but havent had much luck finding one.
Has anyone had one or know anything about there durability?
Thanks

I was going to suggest Doug Nash, but did a little search on the net and found out that They're now out of business. Where have I been, eh?
Personally I would NOT use the t-56 unless it has been modified and updated. A few years ago we (GM techs) were putting them in F and Y cars (Camaros/Trans Ams and Corvettes) on a fairly regular basis for (If I remember correctly) bearing failures and noises. This is with the stock engines too.

I seem to remember my bro telling me he uses the Jerico. He's been through three engines ($15k each!), but still on the same tranny since the 00' season. Considering the abuse it gets from the 650hp 358cid race engines I'd say that's a pretty good record...
Course it's in top gear most of the time I guess...roundy round ya know...

A friend of mine has just put a viper version of the t56 in his 66 570ci chevelle. Its a modified uit with a steel mid plate and a steel front mounting plate. The problem with that tranny is the size. He had to cut out almost the entire tranny tunnel to fit it. Also he cant use a factory console because of shifter location.
The jerico is a hell of a tranny. But this being a street car the gear whine would be very annoying.
Thanks for the input guys. I found a couple of boards with some very good info.
EBD, what type of race car is the jerico in?

I thought I'd ask my friend about this because he built and raced a Mustang last year with a lot of help from George Montgomery (Ohio George) and his son Greg.
Soon you'll see them running a black Saleen doing about 8.50 or so.
My buddy says that the tko is good for 8.90's in classes today, but people generally swap out the gear set with a set of gears from GFORCE. GFORCE also sells a complete tranny which is damn good.
He also said that the Liberty Equalizer is excellent, but you might want to read up on it concerning noise on the street. (not sure how it is)
I wasn't aware of any problems with the T56's strength. I mean, it's behind some kick ass LS1's running 10's in 3500lb cars. I have heard that some company does upgrades to them, but can't remember who it is. National Drivetrain maybe?
I'm hoping to put one of the T56's in the ol' 69 RS and it's a pretty easy fit, I was surprised to hear you say you'd have to bang the tunnel on your's!!
Got any new pics???

The TKO should work very well for your needs. The T56 is a good unit, but it sucks for drag racing with it's tall 1st gear.
The TKO is better suited for abuse and can handle alot more power.

Jim, from your research you probably know that there are different 1st gear ratio's on the T56 from the factory, depending upon what year you get.
I thought that a stocker came with 2.66 or one other ratio. Either way, if you want higher, there are first gear ratio's for the the T56 all the way up to 4.41. You probably already know that though......
Just found this:
Tranny 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th Final Option code
M28 3.36 2.07 1.35 1.00 .80 .62 2.73 GU2(1993 Only)
M29 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 .80 .62 3.23 GU4(1993 Only)
MN6 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 .74 .50 3.42 GU6(1994+)
The crossmember should have which trans it is imprinted on it. And I think there is also a metal tag on the trans itself.

EBD... lol duh. I must have spaced out that web address the first time reading..... lol.
BA, yea, ya gotta cut the whole fucker out. I dont need the B/S. I should have been done with this whole project last summer.
So far the tremec is winning becasue its a minimal tunnel mod compared to the beefed up T56.
Plus the tremec can have an offset shifter from http://www.fortesparts.com/tremec/index.html http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/new_gm_shifter.html and i can keep the console in the car.
I had the T56 in my 94 z28 i just sold. I'm also looking for an 02 ss 6 speed car right now so i can try out some new tuning hardware and software for the ATI procharger. It should rip. My wife will have a hard time passing me.
Besides, even if her SS does spank my SS, I'll still have another little green toy in the corner I'll race her with. One way or another I'll win.
Unless she puts a fogger system on that 502 her ass is mine.
I hope she doesnt read this.

Well, it looks like tremec is releasing a new version of the TKO that is rated for 600 ft lbs any day now.
I'm going to go woth that unit i guess, this way it leaves room for more power later.
Thanks for the input guys.
