ZX12 Vs GSXR1000
A friend is buying a GSXR 1K and I have been looking at ZX12s. The GSXR must have some ghosts in the closet regarding some design issue, trans problems or something as almost every other bike does. I have not been able to find any reason to talk him out the the Suzuki.
Anyone here either have (or had) a 2003-2004 GSXR1000 or know of any problems with the bike? If you have ridden a late model, how would you compare it to a late model ZX12?

Does experience with the '02 count? Personally, I've not heard of any ghosts on the GSXR1000. (a friend has one and we've swapped a few times)
The only comparison I would give, is stuff that you already know. The GSXR is harder to launch, is more wheelie prone, doesn't have the same low-midrange punch, and has far less wind protection.
I view it as a great bike, and a FAST bike, but more "fun" oriented like an R6 instead of something I want to live with every day, for a bunch of miles at a time. Roll-ons with GSXR's and the 12R usually come down to rider ability and rider weight.

Do you know which bike is easier to work on for valve adjustment, etc.? The Suzuki looks pretty compact and I thought it might be harder to do maintenance on.

I've ridden an 03 GSX-R1000, hate to burst your bubble here, but they're nothing to mess with. I haven't heard much about the 1000's after a lot of miles though.

Any particular reason not to mess with the GSXR? Bike too squirrelly?

Yea, Terrass604 my professinal advice is this if you want a very lite and powerful machine that handles like a road racer and the soon 2 b #1 choice for stunters who can afford it, this is the bike for u or your friend, however if u want a bike that has it all and more weight for stability then the 12 is the machine for u. But from a personel standpoint if u ride a 12 or 13 u r the top of the food chain! anything less is just food! u know what I,m saying? its like when u r riding or driving in any other vehicle and u see a 12 or 13 your like (man thats a BUSA or man thats a (12) !but its your choice good luck. I had an '01 12R that I loved, Akro, clutch, lots of stuff. But I found the GSXR to be much more fun to be honest, it weighs nothing and first gear is completely unusable, on a test ride the thing would wheelie in 3rd on accident. IMO, it's a better bike but it really comes down to rider ability on the straights but in the corners, with equal riders, the gixxer will spank the 12, it's just not as much work to ride.

Thanks for all the information, guys. It may work out better to have my friend buy the GSXR and I buy the 12 and maybe we could swap sometimes. Sounds like both will be fun.

Silver, you must mean that "in the corners" that a GSXR would "Spank" the 12.......I could agree with that. In a straight line, I'd have to hear more details because I've experienced different for a few 1k's.

Don't think I've ever had a GSXR1000 keep up with me on a straightaway.

Anyone who'd say "man that's a Busa" normally, wouldn't know what a 12 was anyway, even when I still had the stickers on the side of the bike. I like it that way.

Sometimes I have people come up to me and say "Is that a 600?"
Sure it is, that's why it says ZX12R all over the damn thing.

Heres my experience. No way a stock motor'd one is gonna hang with a piped 12. Equal rider skills will always have the 12 in front.
Ive run them with nitrous and big bore.

I can think of one big reason your friend should wait before he chooses! THE ZX 10R I would wait till one is available to ride then I would make a choice

Some people say don't let a GSXR 1k get out in front. Well, my stock + Full Akro + PCiiir 2k 12 ran down a GSXR 1k after he jumped out in front, egging me on to race. It took awhile to catch him (150+mph). After the race, we pulled over and he said "I hope you weren't running full throttle, because I sure wasn't." Yeah right! I should of asked him to do it again

Yea , now listen up if u quote anything this is it! if u r not ridding a 13 or a 12 u r the food! now u might get lucky and have more skill at launching and get out on the big bikes with a GIX,R1,and soon 2 b released ZX10 but thats it your party is over!period man check it even a BUSA w/PC3R or YOSH. box and exh.sys. slammed and lowered is food for a equally equiped ZX12R don't get it twisted if u r not strong enuff 2 handle the 12 just ride the GIXXER or wait for the ZX10. hey when u ride up on either of those 1000's they r state of the art machines but it won't help u when you r running at your top speed 180mph with a strong tail wind!and a bone stk. 12 or 13 rips past u like u were (proverbialy) standing still! just recognize. I will leave it at that. MADKAW RACING

I remember when I had my 954, dynoed at 145 hp and I only weigh about 145lbs so I could move out when I dropped it to 2nd gear at 70 mph. I raced a ZX12 that way with a rider that weighed about 220lbs. I was barley able to stay beside him until about 140MPH, he left me for dead.

They are both great bikes, but suited for very different purposes....If you run twisties all day every day, the GSXR might be the way to go. But if you ride long distances, or if you do any kind of touring, you mihgt consider the ZX12R. I rode my brothers GSXR 1000 for about 45 minutes up and around Deals Gap, I wil NEVER do it again, that was the most uncomfortable ride I had had in a very long time. My ZX6RR is far more comfy than the GSXR, IMO. I can ride my ZX12R 500-600 miles in a day and love every mile of it.

250? You hide it well(now stop sucking in your gut lol).
The bikes been great, dynoed low but reliable since I took it back from Streits and fixed it my damn self. I took it to JenningsGP back in October with Harry, had a ton of fun, I was slow but certainly not the bikes fault.

Yea what's up? my friend rolls on a 03 GIXER 1000 he highway wheelies the tread off when we r out rippin it up he has the stk. exhaust so it sounds funny and u can't even here it when my 12 is next 2 it full s.s. MUZZYS w/car. fbr. so where did u get that sys. and I know slip ons r not the best but he will need a PC3 your bike sounds mean I raced a 02 that was sretched 4 inch. and geared he was out of n2o good thing he ran a 9.97@140.10mph 1/4 mi ! but I ran 9.83@144.05mph 1/4 he was right there and he is a good racer now if I was useing a 17/47 sprocket combo he would b like dam! wtf u got in there! 2 me the 12 as it is is not a good choice for drag racing! u have 2 alter it quite a bit unlike the 13 it carries more weight over the front and it sits a little lower from the start. they pull harder from 2gr.to5500rpm but after that if a 12 is close it will real it in and rip past all thing equal of course, those carbon rims r trick road racing equip.I bet your bike really likes 2 wheelie! holla back MADKAW RACING

It runs pretty good, but can be a real bitch to ride, and yes it likes to wheelie.I got the yosh system from a friend. I plan to do some suspension mods to it, and more motor work. We've got alot of time in the motor porting and polishing, making sure every thing worked together on the flow bench. Later
