bad truck problems!!

So I took off first thing Saturday in the wee morning hours, off to Dino's surprise birthday bash...and about ten miles before I hit the TriCities, the head gasket blew in my truck. Ouch! Not good at all!

So there I am walking along the highway trying to find somewhere that is open on a Saturday morning and to find help for my stranded self. I called Ozzy who was in route to Dino's place as well, but he is near Portland at that point. I called Dino to tell him I was not going to be able to make it for obvious reasons.

Finally I got my truck to a place that can look at it after the holiday weekend. And a friend from Pullman drove up to pick me up and take me back home (sigh). Sorry Dino I didnt make it! I still havent seen my 12 (another sigh).

Does anyone know where I can get a brand new 22R engine for a Toyota? I've been looking online, but thought maybe someone might know a place to get good deals on one.

Poor me.

only problem here Freek, is not everyone is good at turning wrenches....I would have to pay someone to fix it if it were my truck....so as cheap as a headgasket is, the labor would kill me....

I guess I figured it was better money spent by investing in a new engine rather then rebuilding this one or having the head gaskets replaced?

Mechanic is lookin at it this week, to give a better diagnosis, so we'll see what happens then....ugggggg

If it's just the head gasket, I would think it's just a couple hundred to get it fixed. On the other hand, if the head's shot, it's gonna cost ya.

Hey Beans, a few years ago there was a place in Spokane that sold low mileage Japanese market import motors. Complete engines were in the $600 range at that time.I know a couple guys that bought them and had good results.
Don't know if they are still around or not. You might do some phone calls and find out if they are.

bb, my son-in-law got a guaranteed (everything worked/tested okay & less than 40K miles) Acura motor shipped to him from Cali. I just got back in town, but I'll try to ask him tonight where he got it and if they have any 22R motors.

Didn't get a hold of him tonight, but will call him tomorrow. What year model is yours and will fit other year models fit? I'll also check about the cost of a ECU unit coming with the motor. I think my son-in-law had to get a tranny to go with the motor, since he was switching to a VTEC motor. His total cost was $900. I'll have more details tomorrow.

1985 Toyota Pickup 2WD 5-speed....the 22R carb motors were from like 1981-1985 I believe.

After that, they switched to the 22RE, which are the same except they added Fuel Injection.

Thanks again!

Just spoke with my son-in-law. He got his motor from a place that sells only Honda/Acura motors. He did think he could find a similar place that sells Toyota motors from one of the many Japanese car forums he visits.

He said it might be kinda hard to find a 22R motor since it's so old. At least one that's guaranteed to have less than 40K miles one it. He's going to check if a 22RE motor would easily bolt up to a "pre-22RE" tranny and motor mounts.

He also said that these motors usually come with the ECU, but that it will require some wiring work to intergrate the ECU harness into the truck's wiring loom. He had to do something similar when he switched to the VTEC motor in his Acura.

Still, it could be possible to get a complete motor (with all sensors, intake & exhaust systems, ECU, harness, etc.) AND transmission for less that $1K. He felt sure that if the mounting brackets were different, somebody would have adapters available.

Our hope is that a 22RE will just bolt right into the truck and tranny. Being a fairly common Toyota engine (we think), it should not be too much of a problem to find. Knowing the Japanese, it will either drop right in in just a few hours or it will take a week. There's usually no "in between".

I'll know more either tonight or tomorrow.

The 22R in my opinion was Toyota's best and most popular engine ever made. My transmission and clutch are fairly brand new, so the engine would be my biggest concern. I dont know what sort of an adapter would be needed to accomadate the FI of the 22RE. Another to keep an eye out for is to make sure it comes with all the timing chains.

Thanks Red! Mucho appreciation!

Just have the thing fixed will most likely be your cheapest option, and with the $$ you saved buy some good riding gear and go to a riding school, and.......

Have you considered a V8? I've helped a friend do one, took one weekend to do.

Beans - 80 toy 4x4, 350 chev auto - $2500 obo in todays spokane paper!
If your gonna do a replacement motor stay away from the 21ru shipped from japan motor, pos. fi22re will let you bolt your intake & carb on, at least it let me with my 82 toy 4x with a 22r, everything bolted right in (de smogged it with block off plates).
I would fix it if your head isn't warped, while your in there I'd do the timing chain if it hasn't been done yet, and if you do the timing chain throw in the metal backed guides from a 20r over the cheese plastic guides, a little dremel work and they slap right in!
Spokane import in spokane does re man 22r's for $1100 I think, he has a used 22r with new timing chain and bearing for $750.

Wormser is right. My son-in-law is still working on it. In his "research", he too ran across the 21RU motor. Not only is it a POS, but it's a bitch to get parts for.

Since Spokane is kinda close to ya, it sounds like Spokane Imports might be the ticket. I'll let ya know whant he finds out as soon as I hear from him.

Thanks...I ended up buying a really nice 1991 Toyota Pickup with 4WD in exceptionally excellent mechanical condition, with a 22RE engine in it. Got it off a guy in Post Falls.....

In the meantime, I still plan on keeping my other Toyota truck and getting it fixed, but your right about engines, and I am sticking with a 22R. I'll check out those guys in Spokane eventually here.
