PORT HEAD OR NOT?

O.K.
can i get some input on you fella's with head work/cams done?
i have read and heard many things on porting the head on the 12.

i know theres different things that can be done/bought so, i'm not talking about sinking tons of cash in your head, just maybe the basic porting,exh,intake,5 angle job, with the valve springs,etc..nothin too fancy.

i only ask because i heard from some pretty decent reputable engine mechanics that there is only a few h.p in the head.
(i know:how much $$ and how far are you willing to go for those extra ponies,is it worth the extra $$ for those extra few h.p's,its up to the builder how far he wants to go)

i read a post, but it was awile back that doug meyer said it isnt worth it to be done.still true?

basically i am doing a winter project soon.
(probably somewhere around the 1270 kit area)
and still have not decided on head work or not.
not too many riders i know building 12's.

i figured i would ask here because if i ask the person doing the job thats more money for him and will say its worth it.
has anyone tried those cams yet from muzzys?
would the cams alond with the head be worth it than?

it does help....not to many seriuos engines out there that do not have it done.

Porting the head alone is not going to yeild a big advantage. The port work when done correctly will help but mostly at upper rpm's. You will not gain down low.

Porting is done to a head when the increse airflow capibility of the head is overcome by other engine modifications.
The Zx12r head is a very good head to begin with...just needs a good street/strip port job...NOT a huge amount of material removed...just shaped and blended.
there is no need to go with bigger valves...they are big enough stock.

NOW if you are running a turbo....you most likly would not need it at all...and never need to enlarge the ports.

I dont think it will help to make them bigger. the port velocity will be reduced. I dont have experience with ZX12r, but I have experience with R6, CBR600, ZX9 (that has the same relation in bore and stroke) and the way to go is smaller, in volume so the volocity in the port is increased.

Just my opinion.

he's on the right angle.
I don't believe your traditional porting or hogging out of the runners is needed, but there is certainly flow to be gained by cleaning things up.

What about using the ideas of the "MotoMan"? I have heard people shitting on him in the past, but think he's closer to the mark than most people give hime credit for. I will probably give his ideas a try one of these years, but am hoping for some other opinions.

Everybody shits him if they think they know about bikes, and everybody loves him after experimenting his way of building bikes.
He built me a F2 that was way faster than a F3 with moods, so as fast as a TL1000S.
I have seen a lot of people that where shitting him after he came to my country and the same people where disassembling the F2 to see the head, that a F2 in the draft of a CBR900 was imposible.
In the bike arena there is a lot of secrecy and a lot of jealous people.
The ZX9 and ZX12 have the same bore and stroke ratio and if the choke point is the same in relation the ZX12r will benefit with at least 10hp with the ports reduced.

Pd. Motoman is so "wrong" that GSXR1000 and the 750 use the same head. And the 1000 is a monster

Is this startling news? Doesn't every Prostock head have raised floors of epoxy?

AS I said in my post...IT ALL DEPENDS on the application and the MODS done to the engine and where you need and want the power to be. NOT all engines will benifit from smaller ports.....it is NOT a pancea.

I didn't mean to imply that your porting work was the wrong way to go Doug. I was getting off-topic and wondering why the "Moto-man" thinks he is the originator of raised port floors.

Congrats on the Muzzy sponsorship, good luck this year.

Dean
