A-3 Series Shake Up!

Villopoto wins, Hill ties Dungey for series lead.
Canard rules the Lites, Weimer’s eighth place tightens West Series

While most of America dug itself out of record snowfalls, Monster Energy’s sixth round at Anaheim III glowed in75-degree sunshine and abnormally low evening humidity. The weather, combined with a great, technical, multi line, multi featured track made racing a delight for 34,227 fans. A special Breast Cancer Awareness Day theme for the event included an opening ceremony tribute to female MX pioneer Sue Fish.

Lites

With the West Coast Lites Series going into hibernation until April 24th , Trey Canard, Josh Hansen, and Wil Hahn all wanted to make a dent in Jake Weimer’s series points lead at Anaheim III. Two of them did.

Lites Heat One

Josh Hansen went wire to wire with Blake Wharton and Broc Tickle very close behind.

Lites Heat Two

Weimer rocketed out of the gate and was quickly run down by Canard on lap 2. A scary lap 3 Max Anstie crash however required the Asterisk medical crew to attended to him on track and resulted in a rare complete restart of the heat. Weimer took the restart and this time held off Wil Hahn in second and a conservative riding Trey Canard in 3rd by small margins.

Lites Main Event

Wil Hahn grabbed the holeshot but Canard, Weimer and Tickle all got by quickly. Suddenly on lap 2 Weimer goes down, restarting in last place and only able to squeak out a disappointing eighth place. Tickle got by Hahn for second with Canard riding strong to a comfortable victory. With an eight-week layoff and two races left, Weimer gets to ponder how to ensure his now narrow 14-point lead survives. To add more interest, Canard will spend the Lites West break replacing Team Honda Red Bull’s injured Andrew Short in the 450 class for the next 8 events.

Supercross

With four different winners in the first five events and Reed, Stewart, Grant and Short disabled, the surviving young lions and veteran Windham were all highly motivated to claim an Anaheim III win.

SX Heat One

Dungey led from the start, fortunate for him as a smooth and fast Kevin Windham challenged him several times before backing off for second. Millsaps was a distant third.

2) Kevin Windham-Geico Powersports Honda
3) Davi Millsaps-Honda Red Bull Racing

SX Heat Two

Josh Hill led wire to wire followed by a strong Justin Brayton and Ryan Villopoto who had to work his way up to third from a sixth place start.

3) Ryan Villopoto-Monster Energy Kawasaki

SX Main Event

6th place qualifier Villopoto led wire to wire with Hill giving chase for 20 laps. Hill remained unflappable as first Millsaps, then Windham took turns hounding him. Windham took third from Millsaps on lap 8 and held it to the end. Meanwhile a 5th place launch had kept series leader and fast qualifier Dungey behind Millsaps until a lap 9 pass. Dungey then spun out and almost crashed. Dungey repassed Millsaps on lap 13 but Hill and Windham both skillfully used lapped traffic in the final laps to deny Dungey any chance at the podium. Hill’s four consecutive second place finishes now have him tied with Dungey for the series lead.

The show heads to Indianapolis next weekend for round 7. With Trey Canard joining the 450 war and the East Coast Lites series riders making their debut it should be more great racing.
