Khairul Idham Pawi forced out of Spanish GP after Friday crash

2019-05-05 10:53
Khairul Idham Pawi had a tough day on Friday at Jerez and will be unable to continue the first European race of the 2019 Moto2 World Championship, after suffering an injury. He had been riding at a good pace in FP1, but a crash at Turn 5 with thirteen minutes remaining of the session, brought the Spanish GP to a premature end for the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider. Khairul was taken to the circuit Medical Centre, where he was declared unfit to ride due to a fracture of the fifth finger on his right hand.

The Moto2 rider was quickly transferred to the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville, Spain, where more tests were carried out.

The young Malaysian rider will fly to Barcelona this evening, ahead of an operation that he will undergo tomorrow morning. More information regarding Khairul Idham Pawi's condition will be given shortly.

Johan Stigefelt - Team Director
"Khairul Idham Pawi was very unlucky today. He started incredibly well - the first laps that he completed were faster than he has ever been on race weekend here before and also during our recent test. He was looking good on track and was up in P6 when he crashed. Unfortunately, the little finger on his right hand was badly damaged, so it was necessary for him to go to the hospital in Seville to receive further treatment. He will undergo an operation tomorrow morning in Barcelona, so we will have more information later. I feel very sorry for him and for the team, but we are all supporting him and wishing him a speedy recovery."
