Wet first day in Valencia for Ángel Nieto Team2018-11-16 16:14
Ángel Nieto Team start weekend with fourteenth position for Karel Abraham and 21st for Álvaro Bautista
The first day of the Valencia GP took place in the wet at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, where the MotoGP riders were as much as ten seconds off the circuit record. Marc Márquez was fastest on the opening day, with a time of 1:39.767, one tenth faster than Ducati satellite riders Jack Miller and Danilo Petrucci. Andrea Dovizioso, runner-up in the MotoGP World Championship, was fourth, ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Iannone.
The Ángel Nieto Team ended the last Friday of the season with mixed results for their riders. There was a 14th place for Karel Abraham and 21st for Álvaro Bautista, who crashed in the final moments of FP1. Abraham completed 22 laps, after staying in the garage for part of the second session due to the rain. Teammate Alvaro Bautista was 2.8 seconds off the best time of the day, due to his crash coming just before the lap times were lowered in FP1 –a session in which track conditions were more favourable.
14th Karel Abraham 1:41.160 (22 laps): "In the morning, with all the rain, the bike was even aquaplaning at some points. Later, the intensity of the rain decreased and we were able to improve our times until we finished fourteenth. In the afternoon the session started worse, with more rain, and we didn’t go out until 25 minutes remained. I put in four or five laps hot laps, improving my times little by little, until the rain started again and I came back in: It didn’t make sense to go out on track in those conditions."
21st Álvaro Bautista 1:42,617 (18 laps): "It was a wet day, with different conditions in the two sessions. I suffered a small crash at the end of the morning, when the track was starting to have less surface water on it. I wasn’t hurt, but I missed the final minutes, when everyone improved their times, and I finished twenty-first. In the afternoon it was to lower the times. We need a little more confidence with the rear, because I'm not entirely comfortable with the rear. We’ll see tomorrow how wet it is. It was difficult to ride on the straight today due to the aquaplaning. Tomorrow we will try to improve our feeling."
