Three-Time Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey Wins Second ESPY Award

2016-07-16 02:31
Feld Entertainment® announced today that the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, reigning Champion Ryan Dungey won Best Male Action Sports Athlete for the second year in a row, at the 24th annual ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. Hosted by ESPN, the ESPYs are the annual awards ceremony that recognizes the best athletes in the world and the past year's major sporting achievements.

Dungey, the Red Bull KTM rider, was honored for his achievements during the 2016 season when he claimed his third 450SX Monster Energy Supercross title, winning nine of 17 races. Last year, Dungey made the podium in 16 of 17 races and now holds the all-time Monster Energy Supercross record for podium finishes, with 31 in a row. This year, Dungey also became the first motocross rider to be featured on the iconic Wheaties™ cereal box.

Dungey was first nominated for an ESPY Award in the Best Male Action Sports Athlete category in 2015, ultimately winning the award and becoming the first-ever Supercross athlete to win the prestigious award.

The ESPY win caps off a busy month for Dungey. Last week he was featured in ESPN the Magazine's highly anticipated Body Issue. Dungey is the first Supercross Champion to be included in the special issue, sharing the pages with some of sport's biggest names - Antonio Brown (NFL), Conor McGregor (UFC), Dwayne Wade (NBA), Jake Arrieta (MLB), Von Miller (NFL) and others. The Body Issue celebrates the passion and dedication each athlete has and showcases the results that are underneath their uniforms.

Dungey is expected to participate in the Monster Energy Cup on October 15 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas and could bookend an historic year by sweeping all three Main Events and taking home the largest purse in motorcycle racing - a $1 million payout. This feat has only occurred once in the history of the Monster Energy Cup when Ryan Villopoto grabbed the honor in 2012. This year's Cup is expected to bring out one of the deepest talent pools in years and fans can expect an epic battle among the sport's top competitors.
