10 Questions with Oklahoma Native and Farmers Insurance/Reynard Mods Suzuki Rider Cory Green2014-02-28 14:50The 2014 season of AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, has hit its home stretch with just four rounds remaining. Beginning this weekend in Tulsa, Okla., inside the BOK Center, the anticipated Race to the Championship will pit the top 10 riders in the Arenacross Class in a season-ending showdown to see who will walk away as champion. The points have been reset and starting on Saturday night, this championship is anyone’s to win. One of the 10 riders eager to take his shot at winning the title is Farmers Insurance/Reynard Mods Suzuki rider Cory Green. Hailing from nearby Nowata, Green will begin his quest for a first career Arenacross Class championship in front of the hometown crowd. Through the first eight rounds of 2014, Green has been a solid and consistent contender in the premier division. The veteran rider has maintained his position inside the top 10 throughout the season and enters the opening round of the Race to the Championship as the fifth seed, just three points out of the lead. For this installment of “10 Questions,” AMSOIL Arenacross caught up with Green to get his thoughts on qualifying for the Race to the Championship and the opportunity that lies ahead to begin his quest for a title at his hometown race. 1. You're enjoying a solid 2014 season and are now in the Race to the Championship. What do you attribute your consistency to? Yeah this year has gone as planned so far being in the Race to the Championship, but it's had its ups and downs. Mainly just putting myself in the Main Events each round has been the key in staying consistent and doing what I need to do. 2. You're one of the lucky few riders who get to race in front of a hometown crowd. What does that mean to you and does it make you want to perform better? It means a lot, really. I will have plenty of family and friends there and being gone on the road from state to state every weekend is tough and doesn't let you see them much. It will be nice to have them there to pump me up that much more with the hometown support. 3. How has the competition been in AMSOIL Arenacross this season and how tough was it to make the Race to the Championship? The whole field this year has been stacked, it's unreal. Not only are most all of the top guys last year back, but there's been some new faces this year so it's been good as well. Lap times have been super close from first to about 13th or 14th, so it's definitely tough. 4. What has been the key to keeping you in the thick of the top 10 all season? Mainly riding smart and trying to stay as consistent as possible. You can't be in it if you’re on the ground or not in the Main Event. 5. What does the opportunity presented in the Race to the Championship mean to you? I've yet to race AMSOIL Arenacross since it's been this way, but it's definitely something new. It will make things pretty wild so I'm ready to see how it goes. 6. Robbie Reynard has been a longtime supporter of yours. What has his mentoring meant to your career? I have been around Robbie for a long time and it's unreal how much he knows about every little thing. There's always something new you can learn from him every day. With his dad being my motor and suspension builder it would be tough without them because they always know what I need and (his dad) Robert makes my bike handle and run just how I want it, so it's been huge to me. 7. What kind of advice is Robbie able to give to help you in the Race to the Championship? Well, probably the main thing would be do what you know how to do and don't ride like a baby (laughs). Long time friends always know how to keep it fun so that's the one key thing I have learned. 8. What do you think it's going to take to have a chance at winning the title when the season heads to Salt Lake City for the final round? I know I have the speed this year so mainly just being consistent and letting things come to me how they do. I'm really confident in myself and my equipment this year, and with everyone around me supporting me I think I have as good of a chance as ever. 9. Who or what do you foresee being the biggest challenge in the Race to the Championship? Well I think things are going to get heated up with some intense racing, so I think riding your own race will play a big role in the championship. 10. What are you looking to achieve this weekend in front of the hometown crowd and how do you plan to approach the Race to the Championship? I'm going into this race just like every other one. There's really no added pressure having everyone there, but it will make it that much better to come out and have good results. I'm going to have fun just like every other race and enjoy it with family and friends. The ninth round of the 2014 season and the opening round of the Race to the Championship kicks off inside Tulsa’s BOK Center on Saturday, March 1, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Five-time Monster Energy Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael will also be in attendance. The entire AMSOIL Arenacross season will air on FOX Sports 1, including re-airs on FOX Sports 2.
