TOP TEN SLOT FOR BOBRYSHEV IN FRANCE

2013-06-09 10:23
The Grand Prix of France was a busy and atmospheric event as a
bustling crowd of just under forty thousand packed into Ernee, west
of Le Mans, to digest the eighth round of seventeen in the FIM
Motocross World Championship. MX1 honours on the day belonged to
reigning champion Antonio Cairoli for the fifth time this season as
the Italian defeated local favourite Gautier Paulin and Clement
Desalle. Honda's elite at the highest level of the sport endured
varying fortunes but it was Honda World Motocross team's Evgeny
Bobryshev who placed highest in the overall ranking after two motos
with tenth position.

The Ernee racing surface itself was hard-pack slippery and not
terribly frugal with line options. Ernee was distinctly old-school in
this respect and could have used a better degree of preparation to
the soil in the build-up to the event. Perhaps more than any other
track this season the emphasis on the start was premium.

Max Nagl was a victim of bad luck at the crucial moment. In the
opening race of thirty-five minute and two laps duration under cold
and cloudy skies the German misjudged the gate-drop and had to hustle
back from outside the top ten to find the rear wheel of Tommy Searle
as the pair harried their way up to seventh and eighth respectively.
It was an entertaining and titanic battle, won by the Briton but Nagl
was encouraged by his comeback. A better launch in the second moto
was ruined in seconds as the former championship runner-up lost the
front end of his CRF450R in the first corner and had to restart far
behind the disappearing pack. Nagl again gained good ground but two
more mistakes meant he couldn't reach higher than thirteenth by the
time of the chequered flag. His final rank was eleventh for the day.

Evgeny Bobryshev was again in action despite still being in the
stages of rehab from his broken right leg. The strong Russian was
uncomfortable with putting his foot down in the tight right turns but
knew a positive launch from the gate would go some way to assisting
with a promising race result. In the first moto this wasn't to be and
nervy riding and a cautious approach did not augment his speed.
'Bobby' placed outside the top ten in twelfth but turned a slight
negative into a positive in typical fashion for the second race
thanks to a determined outlook. There were still errors evident in
his performance but some of the old confidence returned and ninth
place was an improvement.

Honda Gariboldi's David Philippaerts classified thirteenth overall in
MX1 and sixth position in the first moto equalled his best yet this
season on the CRF450R, but he was forced to retire on the first lap
of the second outing with a broken radiator. 'DP' pulled into the
pits having been struck by Tommy Searle in a frantic opening phase of
the race. The Italian, who faces a home Grand Prix next weekend
(Maggiora is a matter of kilometres from his home north of Milan), is
currently tenth in the championship standings. Nagl is seventh and
Bobryshev is eleventh despite missing three rounds.

At almost the half way stage the FIM Motocross World Championship
heads directly south for the Grand Prix of Italy on June 15th/16th.

HONDA RIDER COMMENTS:

Max Nagl
Race Result: 8th/13th Championship position: 7th
"At the moment things are not going in the direction that I want. You
can improve the riding all the time and I was really fast today but
in the first race I had a terrible gate jump and then in the second I
crashed on the first turn. I came through really well in the first
moto and I was happy about that; I made the second fastest time as
well. We changed a few small things on the bike for the second Heat
for the start and they worked because my jump was good and I was near
the front but I think somebody touched my front wheel as I lost the
bike. I was so disappointed because I knew I would be totally last.
Anyway I fought back to tenth but crashed on a jump because a stone
became wedged between the handlebar and the grip and stuck the
throttle open. I picked up the bike, got rid of the stone and went
again. My arms started to get a bit tired and I found myself on the
floor again when the bike swapped left-right and put me down. I
picked up and just went for the finish. It was not easy to find grip
on this track but I liked it."

Evgeny Bobryshev:
Race Result: 12th/9th Championship position: 11th
"The track wasn't great for passing. It was really tough. You had to
wait for a rider to make a mistake. In the first race I didn't have
such a good start and after that I was just battling with the bike
and have a lack of confidence at the moment to attack a track like
this. I was wooden on the bike! Due to my leg I wasn't balanced very
well and in the right hand corners I have to put a lot of pressure on
my left leg. The second race was better and I got 'into' it a bit
more. Unfortunately I was part of the pile-up at the start but my
lines were better and I was smoother. I came back from somewhere very
far to take ninth, so that was not so bad. The hardest part for me at
the moment is that people are thinking and asking 'what is wrong with
him?' but they don't know how tough it is. It is a shame but I will
keep my head up and race-by-race get near the level I know I can be."

David Philippaerts:
Race Result: 6th/DNF Championship position: 10th
"A real shame today and the same story; one moto pretty good and the
other pretty bad! I was happy with sixth in the first race. I had
good speed and could make some nice lap-times, even though I was by
myself and it was hard to catch anyone. On the first lap of the
second Searle took Paulin wide in a turn and when he came back he
smashed into me and damaged the radiator. When I saw the water coming
out I knew my race was over and I was pretty angry about it. Not so
much you can do. It will be a short week now but Maggiora is very
close to my home and I'm very excited about this Grand Prix. I will
go there to be as near the front as possible."
