DESALLE THIRD ON LAVTIAN MX1 GATE2012-07-14 16:31
Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1's Clement Desalle defied illness to take third position in the MX1 qualification heat at Kegums today for the Grand Prix of Latvia.
The 10th round of 16 in the FIM Motocross World Championship got underway with changeable skies bringing showers and sunny spells. Desalle, steering his factory RM-Z450 with the red number plate signifying his status as series leader, made a reasonable start across the shallow and fine soil and rode a lonely 20 minutes and 2 laps for third position.
The Belgian is struggling with the effects of a cold but was able to work on finding a decent set-up for his race machine across the slippery and fast surface. He set a decent lap and found sufficient rhythm to enter the top five in practice and then conserved energy and took a low-risk approach to the qualification heat.
In contrast Tanel Leok was frustrated in his attempts to forge acceptable speed at Kegums. The Estonian tried different solutions to try and maximise grip but couldn't find the extra edge he was searching for to run higher than 10th in the MX1 classification. Two slots on the gate in the top 10 for the two Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 riders was an acceptable day's work for the crew in anticipation of the 35 minute and 2 lap motos tomorrow. The races will start with the initial right hand hairpin turn representing one of the tightest on the schedule.
More alternating weather conditions are predicted for Sunday.
"I am feeling a bit sick so it could be better. I feel good on the bike though and my riding was alright. I'm suffering a little and it's bad luck that it has fallen on a race weekend. Practice and pre qualifying was OK and I could find my rhythm. My start was average and I moved up to third but Cairoli and Goncalves were too far away. I closed the gap slightly but didn't want to go too crazy and wanted to save some energy for tomorrow. Third position is fine for the motos."
"Today could have been better and I'm struggling a little bit with the track. I can improve my speed but we also need to work on the set-up. The soil is loose on the top and very hard underneath and I find it really slippery. Tomorrow is another day and hopefully it'll be better."
