WATERS CLOSES IN ON AUSTRALIAN MX LEAD

2012-07-03 17:57
Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Todd Waters picked up his fifth overall Pro Open podium of the 2012 season with second position aboard the fuel-injected RM-Z450 at Hervey Bay's sixth round of the MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, in Queensland on Sunday.

The 21-year-old from Cairns was at his consistent best as the second half of this year's series commenced, finishing the trio of gruelling motos with 3-4-2 results.

Waters worked his way into second during the final 30-minute moto when conditions were at their toughest, challenging for the lead before the chequered flag flew. Despite narrowly falling short of victory aboard the 2012 Suzuki RM-Z450, he was satisfied with the runner-up slot. The result now sees the Suzuki rider climb to within 12 points of the lead in the Championship standings, continuing to close the gap on experienced former world number two Josh Coppins.

Said Waters: "I was pushing hard out there; we made a few changes to the bike and they paid off. I had a ball out there though, it was a tough track and it's been positive weekend.

"I'm just going out there to race myself, ride my own races and the Championship will look after itself. I just really want to thank Suzuki, Jay Foreman our Team Manager and all the team sponsors - it's all paying off."

Waters' Kiwi team-mate Cody Cooper suffered from an inconsistent round in Queensland but managed to take an assertive victory in moto two after claiming the holeshot on his 2012 RM-Z450.

Crashes in motos one and three affected his overall result, which was eighth overall. In moto one he finished a fighting eighth but he suffered an unfortunate DNF in the final outing.

"It was up and down for me at Hervey Bay," Cooper reflected. "I got a good start in the first one inside the top five, and then Dan Reardon sort of came across and slid out, so we went down. I got back up to ninth.

"In moto two I got an awesome start to holeshot, which I've been working on, and I won that one. In the last race I was in second, but got hit hard and went down pretty big, so that was a bad ending."

Just past the halfway point, Cooper is currently ranked fifth in the championship standings.

Western Australian privateer Dean Porter was another standout Suzuki contender in the premier class on the weekend, claiming a season-best sixth overall for the round.

The MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, will continue at Horsham in Victoria on Sunday, July 15th.
