i finally found something wrong with 16-43 gearing

Well today was the first day that i topped out with the new gearing. I was riding with a 600 messing around and we both took off i of course gave him a hell of a hit first,well i shifted down to the top of 4th gear and it seemed like less than 10 seconds i hit the rev limter pretty hard. Well i thought that i missed shifting into 6th gear but nope i was topped out in 6th gear,showing just over 170. It sucked. Now i dont hit that speed really ever that much,but if i was racing my buddies on their 1000's or busa's i think i would be in trouble if at the top end. I just couln't belive how fast it got topped out with all the new gearing. Has me worried and wondering if i should get rid of the 16 sprocket. I mean i need it down low for the bmw,zx10 races i'm sure. But if i keep it i will get killed up top. Don't know what to do. I mean i dont go above 165-170 very often at all,but again this kind of shocked me. It didnt feel like i should be red lined that early on. And i know i'll get killed for this already did once,but when i hit it i hit it pretty good,like the bike had WAYYY more left and i was just wasting all that power. What to do what to do. Again i'm afraid if i go against a big bike if i dont have the gearing it'll be close,and if i do i'll get walked up top. HELP ME.

HAHA hell know then i would need to gear it down just to go anywhere. They are a lil weak down low for my taste.

Put a 18t sprocket on. Then you can go over 200. No BMW or 1000 is going to catch that

Here we go again.

Brock's gear chart says 43/16 is good for an actual 187 mph @ 11,000 rpm.

I'll bet the speedo would be reading in the 190's.

You got some 'splainin' to do Lucy......................

This is a weird question,but lets say you took the same bike same rider and he raced himself.One had 16-43 gearing one had stock 17-42. How bad would the guy with the extra gearing pull away from the stock gearing i wonder??

My friend i can assure you thats not true at all. I'm telling the truth. I even went on gear commander when i got home and it was in the 170's. Trust me on this. And first of all without the ecu flashed the bike only hits 186,and with all that gearing its not hitting anywhere near 186,so youuuu my friend have some explaing to do!!!! And i dont have the guhls flash. Hell i really dont want to go that fast on public roads.

I didn't say it would hit 187. I said that it is GEARED FOR 187.

If your speedo said 170 something, your actual speed was probably 160 something.

How about a link to the "gear commander" that you used?

roll on i like 17-43 on my 09 drag way i like 16-43 . raced my freind on way home both gearing but over 100 roll on the 16-43 sucked.

Well just went out for a quick ride. After luckys post i wanted to be sure i was right and after 11:00 at night i was able to open her up more. So i was a lil off,i guess i saw 170 after a 1 or 2 of letting off the throttle because tonight i got right against redline in 6th and its closer to 180. Honest mistake when racing i didnt want to take my eyes off the road. Even tonight it was hard to go that fast and take your eyes off the road long enough to see the rpm gauge and the speedo at the same time. Hell almost impossible really. But onething i learned is SCREW that 16-43 is fine because without the excitment of racing someone,trying to purposely top out this bike on a public road scared the shit out of me. I tried twice and the second time i was almost at 170 and said nope i'm done and shut it down. So will see i'll have to race someone with a bigger bike to see how it goes i guess. I'm thinking with my light ass and gearing and brocked out,hopefully the race will be over before i get near 170!!!
Oh and lucky the site is called gear commander. Google it,it has the 12 zx14r on their.

Had me thinking for a second john ... I hit 162.60 in 5th in the 1/4 mile and shift to 6th after the finish line .. Seems top speed would be closer to 180 with that gear .. Yes i'm using the same gear 16/43 .. For the street i would stick with stock gears or 17/41 ... 17/41 will help with wheelys .. If you are worried about some liter bike getting the jump on you in a roll on race either start off in a lower gear or pick a roll on speed that give you the edge .. There are many ways to play the roll on game to give you the edge .. Trust me anyone that roll on races know where he wants to be in his power band to have the edge on you .. I know you want a fair race but they are never fair .. I had a guy in a zx10 set me up once .. 2 gear roll at 60 MPH .. I played by the rules and used 2 gear , he used 1 first gear and cheated .. Didn't matter i still drove him down .. He asked to do it again, so this time i played his game and used 1 gear like he did .. I out right killed him and he was pissed .. Fair is fair ...

IF you're talkin 14R...it's pretty well documented at this point that the speedo is off by a mere 2-3 mph...even topped out.SO...you remove that TOP SPEED LIMITER...and...who knows?But 16/43 WILL run through the gears VERY QUICKLY..When I first did that on my 07...I also thought.."something's wrong here...it CAN'T be hitting the limiter yet?"...it was....6yh came around awfully fast.I think my top speed on that bike with that gearing and speedohealed was like 187....somewhere in there.

Thanks smokin. If its near a true 180 i might stick with it. I dont worry about wheelies to much because i rarely crack it full throttle in the lower 2 gears anyway. But i have a question for you lee,i'm not doubting you just don't understand how the bike can still hit near 180 stock ecu with that much gearing??? I mean stock gearing they limit the bike to 186. Wouln't u lose more than 6-7 mph with -1+1 gearing???

Can't say , don't know because i never tried it with my zx14r ..And if i did i still could not tell you because my ECU is reflashed to 300 MPH and my limiter rasied 500 RPMs .. That is a question for guys like Shane and Ali that do the land speed racing ..

Thanks lee,yeah part of me would love to go back to stock gearing,BUT i'm afraid i'll miss the feel of -1+1 gearing. The last thing i need is to FEEL like my 14 is slower.Make sense to you??? I mean it would have to feel a lil slower just punching it around town and all. But it would also feel smoother a lil i'm sure. But thats my biggest fear that my new 14 would feel slower.

I completely understand that .. What i would say is leave the 16/43 and get the ECU reflashed ... No speed limiter and rev limiter moved up 500 RPMs should keep you out in front no problem ..
