PC3 MAP SWITCH
I'm getting this Power Commander Multiport Hub w/switch (for multi map programming). It's supposed to let you switch from one map to another on the fly. I thought it might be fun to play with different maps and see what kind of seat of the pants differences they might make. Moreover I'm interested in creating an economy map for when I'm droning down the highway. What do you think? Should I start with say a 10% (more? Less?) decrease across the board from my existing map? Or just reduce the fuel at cruise rpm and throttle settings by that much (again, more? Less?) I'm using the fuel moto a/p flies out map now.

Alrighty then, I guess I'll have to take it next door. Sad though, I still like this forum better.

I asked Brock about this with my ZX-14 and came to the conclusion that -10% at crusing rpm/throttle was the best way to go. Makes sense, you don't have to switch anything, just flick your wrist.
I'm curious if this reflects in the MPG calculations on the bike computer. I can't really tell, but I haven't tried to do a direct comparison.

So say from 1500 rpm to 4500 rpm, 5-20% throttle?

Mine has area p flys out map from fuel moto as map one.
I installed the Multiport Hub w/switch and have an economy map from fuel moto for the same setup as map 2.
It's the same map except for a fuel reduction of 8 in the 5-40% throttle and 1500 to 4250 rpm range.
I'll need a few more tanks on the highway and I don't feel like I've done enough comparison to be fair to map one yet but my initial findings are a 5.5 mpg increase using map 2 on mostly highway riding.
My seat of the pants sensor tells me that map one feels more powerful but map two is fine too. I was expecting map two to be a turd in the reduced range but it's really not bad at all. More miles = more accuracy so we shall see.

WG, does your pc3 lcd display thing show that you spend most time cruising at up to 40% throttle? Seems a bit high to me? I was going to start with a 5 point reduction in the economy map, but we'll see.
If I can get my avg mpg to be at least 40 overall on the long trips, I'll be satisfied. As of the end of last season, I was lucky to break 36/37 mpg (thats US gallons and miles).

I don't know, I can't see it. 40% seems high to me too but that's what fuel moto sent me and that's what I'm using for now.
Too early to say for sure but right now map 1 is giving me 35 mpg and map 2 is 40.5 US on the highway, speeds ranging from 70 to 80

Interesting. Do you have that lcd display accessory dynojet offers. Shows your tach and speedo on it as well as other parameters like fuel enrichment/diminishment and tps. That would definitely tell you exactly where you are on the throttle.

No got that. I thought you meant the bars on the pc3. I just have a pc3, Multiport Hub w/switch and two maps loaded. I can switch from one map to the other without reloading.

OK after 5 fill-ups on each map here are the results.
Map 1 (fuel moto a/p flies out map)= 36.075 mpg
Map 2 (fuel moto a/p flies out MPG map)= 40.216 mpg.
I said earlier that I was getting just over 38 but that was based on the bikes indicator, my error. These numbers are calculated. I've made the comparisons as fair as possible and they are based mostly on highway miles running about 70 to 80 mph. Also several 40 mile round trips to work in almost no traffic but some lights and an avg speed of about 50. I was thinking conservative most of the time but I did get into it a few times on each map. Map 2's performance was just fine and I would be hard pressed to tell a real difference. That makes sense to me because it's only adjusted in the 5-40% throttle and 1500 to 4250 rpm range. I don't see the map switch as a big gain as yet but I like having it. Next I'll compare Jerry's custom map. Maybe the next time I get some free money from the casino I'll go to a tuner and have two maps (pwr & eco) made for my bike. That might stretch the difference a bit more. For those who are interested in getting an extra 20-25 miles out of a higway tank and probably not noticing any difference in performance fuel moto's MPG map might be worth trying. I did get a record 240 mile tank with it.

Thanks for the results! Getting 40 mpg is one of my goals with this pig. I do wonder how much difference or loss of mpg you'd get if you only went 5-20%. In fact, why'd you choose 5% and not 2% as a starting point, or even 0%?
1500-4250 is a good cruising range. In fact, maybe even going as high as 4500.
I'm curious to see if jamie is still using the map he developed on my bike to make these reductions from (flies out, areap).
If you can send me that economy map, I'd appreciate it. I'll drop you a line via pm with my email.

I didn't chouse it, I just used what they sent me. I don't see any harm in modifying it as long as you don't get too lean.

Why??
Look at it this way... You're on a 3000 mi trip. You increase your fuel mileage by over 10%. You travel 320 miles further for the same gallons of gas. Yeah I know, its an 8 gallon savings for a whole 28 bucks at 3.50 a gallon. Might pay for a nice steak dinner. Or half of a really cheap motel. Fill your tummy or have a hot shower and a decent nights sleep and feel good about it.. We all need to feel good about something.. but hey its sumpthin!
36 and 40 mpg used for quick figuring. YMMV
