need titanium header welded
I have a Muzzy M14 header for a Gen 1 that got cracked along the welds on the top and bottom of where the primary tubes go into collector. I know Muzzy would repair it.. but last time I sent the header to them to fix it they did a great job but I feel they over charged me a bit. This is literally 2 small straight welds.. 1 is maybe 1" and the other not even that. There is no gap and should be about 10 minutes work for someone setup to weld titanium. Can't find anyone local that is willing to touch it. Can anyone recommend a shop I can ship the header to?

I ended up having to send my Ti (fabrication and welding) work to the friggin KTM Superbike operation in Italy!! No one in N/A would touch it either........IMO if Muzzy will do it, send it - cheaper then replacing a melted pipe.

Ti isn't difficult to TiG. See in the pic how they are backfilling the runner with inert gas? Probably Argon.
A good shield is necessary to prevent oxidation... Ti loves oxygen. Oxygen rich Titanium is very brittle. The finished weld should be dull silver or at most, straw colored. Blue, brown, or black after welding is a grind-out and redo.

The boys at KTM told me this took quite awhile. They had to weld the fabricated Ti EGT mounts to the Ti header in stages, I guess to keep it cool. Beautiful job.

Well if its a "one off" and there isn't a fixture then sure its going to be difficult to maintain locations. Heat = distortion.
It does look like they did well. Just puzzling no-one here wanted the job. If nothing more than notoriety.

Hum.. all good info. I guess I'll get some pics and send them to Muzzy and see what they say. I know they can do it cuz they rebuilt the collector once for me after the O2 bung tore out. Learned the hard way to apply anti-seize.

Well... only the plug is steel. the bung is titanium. That said.. this was the previous break, not the current weld I need. This was already fixt up by Muzzy... they completely cut that BS out and welded in a thicker patch which the bung is in. Anyway.. same header.. but new cracks. Sorry for the confusion. Maybe tomorrow I'll get some new pics just to give this thread clarity?
Weld titanium? Anyone?

Hi Gunner,
Sure.. would be awesome if you could tackle this. I'll send you a PM.
Here is actually what is needed... weld over two cracks... top and bottom of the collector:

the Bung crack was repaired a couple years back by Muzzy.

I can't see the cracks in the pictures... Are both accessible? If so like I said it's no problem at all..

Hi Gunner,
Yes.. both cracks are completely accessible. I pushed the tubing down so the cracks are as closed as I could get them.. should make for an easy weld in capable hands. I sent you a PM with my email address to work out the details on shipping, payment etc. Please reply via email. I am very motivated to get it sent your way and greatly appreciate your offer.

Sorry I haven't been on here in several days.. Shoot me that email again. I'll check back over the next couple days and get back to you once I get that email address. This won't take but a day to turn around now that I know the area's are accessible without having to disassemble the tubes to reach them. I see the cracks now also...

Remember now, you can't weld steel or anything else to Ti except Ti. The different metal cooling properties will crack the weld.

"I" would give it a shot before "I" send anything off . its crack already so I guess i couldn't do any more harm than it already has..

Moto.....If you need a Ti bung (they're cheap) for your Ti pipe, Muzzy has them available. I've also got one you can have, depending on where you live. cliff@randallsearch.com

You are welcome Sir. Like I said it was a piece of piss to repair to borrow my Canadian wife's words. That's Canadian for there wasn't anything to it for those that were like I was when I heard that and said " Huh?"
