bigger gears

I have a 09 monster 14 .. I was wanting to know if any one could tell me if I change my sprocket to a 18 front and 40 rear , by how much would my speedometer would be off by .I like cruising at around 100 and Id like to get better mpg at that speed . any clues would help.

You shouldn't get bad mph at 100 now, but 18/40 is going to suck riding in town.

So let me get this right..... You're concerned about your mpg while cruising at 100? Sounds like your priorities are a little off.

I get 17mpg at 175 is that bad?

I calculate that at an indicated 100 mph you would be doing 108.5 mph with 18/40 gearing

That doesn't take into account any built-in speedo inaccuracy and they're usually about 5% optimistic anyway.

thanks for the replys .to respond I m going on a long fast ride in January with my gf and I want to get better mpg .she gets around 40 mpg compared to mine at 30 .so thanks bobc I didnt know how to calculate this gearing and finding going up gears on the web is like finding needle in haystack.
