can a simple adjustment fix this?

This has happened twice and besides being very embarrasing makes a loud expensive sounding clunk. Sitting at a stop light, shift up from 1st into neutral (neutral light is glowing) let out clutch and then loud bang and engine dies.

Is there something simple I can check out?

Don't be shy when clicking up into neutral, Kawasaki's have a positive neutral finder that keeps it from going into 2nd when sitting still. That may not be the problem but it sound like your getting it halfway between 1st and neutral.
