2012 ZX14R clutch replacement ..

Ok guy here is the skinny ... The 2012 uses a bit different set up that the 2006 to 2011 ..

For some reason kawi changed a few things , why i have no clue .. Below is the Gen 1 Vs the Gen 2 clutch plate set up ..

Complete 06-11 ZX-14 clutch Includes

Qty (8) 13088-0030 (3.0mm)
Qty (1) 13088-0031 (3.0mm)
Qty (1) 13088-0032 (3.8mm)
Qty (9) 13089-0018 (2.6mm)

Complete 2012 ZX-14 clutch Includes

Qty (7) 13088-0030 (3.0mm)
Qty (2) 13088-0031 (3.0mm)
Qty (1) 13088-0032 (3.8mm)
Qty (9) 13089-0018 (2.6mm)

As you can see it uses (2) 13088-0031 fibers unlike the Gen 1 zx14 that only uses one 13088-0031
Because of this it only uses (7) 13088-0030 Fibers .. Everything else remains the same .. Stack still ends up at the same 2.13 ..

Now guys you can use a Gen 1 clutch set up , it will work and Wee has proved it works fine in the Gen 2 ..

I think the Gen 2 clutch may just be a bit better than the gen 1 set up because it uses two of the wide pad fibers and the Gen 1 only uses one wide pad fiber that ride on the pressure plate .. The gen 2 uses a wide pad fiber on the pressure plate and the rear most wide pad plate rides on the back of the clutch hub .. Using two wide pads fibers should give more contact and maybe last a bit longer..

The gen 1 uses a thin plate and a clutch cushion that rides on the very rear on the clutch hub ..
The Gen 2 still uses the thin plate with the clutch cushion but they moved it one place forward so it dosen't ride on the alum hub ..It now rides inbetween two of the steels plates .. This may have been done to stop undo wear to the alum clutch hub .. That is my best guess anyway ..

I got into this because i wanted to try a Cycle Concepts Drag Pak .. I call them and they didn't know there was any difference and had been selling the Gen 1 drag packs to gen 2 owners ... They have reported no problems using the gen 1 cluches in a Gen 2 ..

I asked them to built my clutch pack like the gen 2 and sent them the part numbers and stack numbers .. By the way the stack numbers are the same for both Gen 1 and gen 2 .. 2.13 ..

You guys can go either way and i'm sure it will be just fine .. I just wanted to keep the same set up as it came from the factory ..

I've got my 2nd cycle concept clutch pack and I'm a happy camper. No complaints.

Don't quote me, but I bet they move the clutch cushion forward away from the clutch hub because the gen 2 has a slipper clutch. If the 2 clutch cushion "washers" were at the back of the clutch, when the slipper clutch separated it could bind those "washers" between the back of the clutch basket and the hub.

Hope that makes sense.

Made sense to me ... It's possible .. I have my slipper removed and so does Wee so we would never see that problem if it was a problem .. The slipper part of the clutch is behind the inner hub so i'm not sure it would have that problem .. Kawi did it for some reason and that might be it ..

Thanks for the clarification!

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Hey Smokin, When I changed my clutches I found that there were two thinner steels in place 2.3mm and we replaced those with two 2.6mm steels. and it increased my stack height and helped the way the bike left. The clutch still feels the same pressure wise just releases a lil quicker. 60fts also were more consistant.

Strange that it had 2.3mm in it .. Book calls for 9 2.6mm steels .. I guess it doesn't matter as long as it comes up to 2.13 to 2.15 stack spec .. The clutch they are sending came up to between 2.13 and 2.14 ..

I'm going to check my old steels tonight and see if all them were 2.6s or like yours had a few 2.3 s stick in the stack ..

It was odd that they were in there but we looked up the numbers and Kaw does offer 2.3 2.6 and 2.9mm steels. Let me know if u had 2 thin ones in yours or mine could have been just a freak situation

Ok ..... Mine had 3 of the 2.3mm plates and 5 of the 2.6mm plates ... Viper I'm glad you pointed that out to me , I never check the steels , just the fibers ... I always toss the steels out when i change the clutch anyway .....Maybe that is why i had 3 warped plates because of thin plates ? I have never before warped a plate in a ZX14 till now ... But my other zx14s didn't make 210+ HP either ..

Bently I'm not ... I had to ride the clutch out much much more on this bike to keep the wheel on the ground .. I didn't have to do that on my old zx14s .. 174 HP and 101 TQ Vs 210+hp and 125 TQ with the same size clutch , i would think they would wear out a little faster .. I could have run them more but it was getting a funky feeling leaving the line .. Plus it was starting to drag with the clutch pull in .. I'm glad i did check it because i did have hell getting the first 3 plates out of the basket .. I'll try this drag pack and see how long it lasts now that i have the right gearing and clutch spring pressure set up working good .. Remember most of my runs were done with stock springs ( no shims ) and no clutch mod ..

But now since u replaced the thinner steels with the thicker ones does your bike seem to leave a lil harder? I know mine does. My partner said he always puts a thicker steel in on all his clutch installs, he says it last alot longer. We do get alot of runs when we go to the track too at least 15 or more passes. So hot lapping may not be clutch friendly either.

The first time I saw your listing of clutch parts I was wondering how the stack height could come out to 2.14 if all the steels were the standard .103 (2.6) ones.

Those numbers were from the Kawi parts book , not from my bike .. I just copied that right from the book .. It called for a stack of 2.13 to 2.15 .. The drag pack i have coming is between 2.13 and 2.14 or so Dywan told me on the phone when i ordered them .. Dywan said he makes all the zx14 and zx14r stacks just a bit taller than stock ..

I have to tell you guys , i never ran anything but factory clutches in my zx14s ..I never check stack numbers , just tossed them in and they worked great ...With the cost of the factory clutches at 235.00 plus shipping i had to go a cheaper way .. At 154.00 for a drag pack i had to give it a shot .. From what i have read they last as long or longer than factory and work better ... I guess i will find out for myself .. If they don't it's back to factory clutch packs ..

I've never had a problem with the dragpaks, I do think they tend to bite a little harder than factory until they get worn in a little.

Same thing I had noticed about them. I am running a set now and they are doing great. Have used the oem lately but did run the dragpack in the past.
