push pins for undertail

HEY GUYS! Have anyone one of you hade problems with keeping the plastic push pins in the under side of the tail section on your bike? I replaced them and made sure they were pushed in all the way and the DARN THINGS CAME OUT!

No problems there. My problem is with the darn screws that go into the side of the gas tank cover near the seat, I bought a whole set of fasteners for the bike when I bought it, and put new ones in. Wouldn't you know one of them vibrated out within a few months. The threads didn't grab very well in the first place. Guess I need to figure out what they screw into and see if it's safe to tap new threads in it.

DARN! I'd be upset too!

I don't like how the rubber capture nut(I'm not sure of the correct name to the part) that the screws are to fasten to are deteriorated and hard to put back inplace!

Monitor the wellnuts closely. They can come apart and be injested by the engine, at a significant cost. Poor design that also carries over to the 14R....

Rajun, maybe the holes are worn. That may be the cause that those plastic clips dont get enough bite. This may sound dumb and dont take offense but are they the right size clips? Ive never had that problem even with semi broken clips

Yes sir! They are the right ones... I went to Fox's Suzuki in Roxborro, N.C. to show them my bike, where they would be located and that they are the same as the ones on the 2010 and 2012. I will check for the wear in the hole size. I will put a new one in and see if I did not push them all the way through to the black plastic.

Thanks Shane!

I took the gas tank cover off and sure enough one of the wellnuts was almost ripped in half. Unfortunately I couldn't get it out without it ripping and it fell in. Had to lift the tank and remove the cover and fish it out. I wouldn't have known to do that if not for you. In fact I'm pretty sure I would've assumed it would eventually fall harmlessly to the ground. Good looking out! This forum is the best.

Interesting side note. My bike has no flies. It has a tremendous power surge at 6000RPM so I thought they were still in there. I guess I gotta find a new map and see if I can't smooth out the power delivery.

Thanks again!
Rob

I am no push pin expert... I know that the 14's have at least a couple different sizes of push pins, and if you didn't know that, it is very easy to put the different version's in a hole that takes the other, etc. etc. One thing I do with push pins in most applications for the 14 is take the whole pin apart, you will have two seperate pieces of course, and install the main body, or female end, if you will, and install the pin when you can see, or, feel how far past the whole, the push pin body is going...granted, that is easier said than done. With push pins, it is easy to miss the different sizes, (sometimes) you can't always see where the pin will go...but you can see many of them... Plus the other comments made on this post, are ones I would consider.

I thought there was only one size push pin. The ones under the nose are different?

Yes...there are two different sizes...the nose section, the inner black plastic, and where some of the rubber skirting fastens to the inner fairings, just under the George Foremans...

It's surprising that this crappy piece of design was carried over to the 14R, especially since Kawasaki do seem to have listened to feedback and sorted out a lot of the shortcomings of the original model. Probably no warranty claims from wellnuts being ingested and no performance gain for changing it.

How hard would it be to use a hank bush in there, or at least a small guard to keep the wellnut from falling into the airbox?

I just keep a real close eye on mine and put those upper bolts back in the George Foremans carefully.
