making another cut down tank

A friend had asked me to make a cut down tank for him after he tried one of mine at Maxton. But he wanted to have one that allowed him to mount the plastics and keep his bike looking better than my naked/hacked up bike .

Here is what I came up with. It should allow him to extend the seat pan and move 6" forward to make the bike easier to launch . It looks alot like the shoot out tank...

anyone know if the 14r uses the same mounting points as the gen 1?

Roy

It made it very hard for me to ride , i lay my chest on the tank and Roys bike has no tank .. I had to stuff towels in my jacket and lay on the frame with NOS noids poking me in the chest ... I will not use a cut down seat either ... The zx14 fits me fine as is ...

I don't like a cut seat either, but I have to use one or I end up on the seat cowl, lol.

Roy - Looks like your day has been more fun than mine.

Lee - I tried it on a bit yesterday. I think it will make for a nice flat smooth platform to lean forward on, just a little lower than stock. No regulator or solenoids on it though.

Do you have any pics of it mounted?

Good work Roy.

I've got a spare tank and wanting to cut one down for Loring this year. I'll be watching and hoping for more pictures.

Thanks for posting Roy,
Dan

I know I would love to see some good pics and/or measurements. I have been thinking about doing this exact thing. I am just a poor boy living on military pay, I can't afford an $1100 catalyst tank...lol

Roy i was just about to cut my spare tank, but your pics have changed how i was going to do it , i like the way you have left a skin over top , i was just going to cut it square above where your thighs grip the tank .

the first tank i cut was cut like that, but it leaves no way to put the plastics back on... I think this one will look much nicer.

Good to hear that it helped out.

I don't have to wory about plastics , running it as a naked bike , (on an open record )
Hope to have this the first naked bike over 200mph on the Aussie salt

It will look a lot nicer than the bare frame

i ran 203 naked with a 40 shot , and Ali went 207 on the same bike. It took 250 hp at the wheel to do that and the stock clutch was complaining... but it is not impossible.

the cut down tank will really help with the aero on the naked run .... good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Your doing it tougher in a standing start mile , no room for missed shifts or short shifting, everything has to be perfect , longer runs on the salt are more forgiving
I would realy love to get to one of the mile events , Mojave is the closest to the right timing and right distance while i'm in the US , but i would have to fly over after Bubs or its just too long away from work

Jim will be riding it , he likes them nekkid
He has been over 200 a few times on the 750 , but its perimiter frame makes it a wide barge compared to the 14 and its monocoque frame , will be an interesting comparison
Hp is probably going to be similar

And our air is thicker than Bonneville , 600ft compared to 4400 , that will cost a few mph

Here's a picture of it with a stock seat. I like it better with a race seat. Makes it really easy to lay down pretty low behind the windscreen.
